  1. Hi, Christy, I had surgery the beginning of Jan.09 and got different info. about when full-blown exercise is okay. From OCC, I heard that after the 3 week liquid phase, all exercise can be resumed--except abdomen exercises. But I also heard that for 3 MONTHS, we should avoid strenuous exercise until we are fully healed. I wasn't sure which advice to follow. Last week I used the elliptical trainer and felt fine until I drank a protein shake afterward. I was in agony all night with shoulder pain/pain around my port and have been limiting myself to mostly liquids ever since. I'm going to use my body as my guide and err on the side of safety and healing: no strenuous exercise until 3 months after my surgery date. But you are not alone!! Hang in there!
  2. Hi, everyone: Someone told me that Dr. Cirangle in San Francisco will do aftercare and fills for Dr. Ortiz patients. He is with Laproscopic Associates of San Francisco. I know nothing more about this doc or how good/helpful/responsive he is. If anyone goes to him, I'd love to hear how it went!
  3. Hi, Kim: I'm just a newbie but here's a perspective that may help: Understandably, you are frustrated with your "slow" weight loss. I completely get that and understand your frustration (you and I are similar sizes and I struggle with similar issues). However, most "lower BMI" patients aren't going to lose weight as fast as those with more to lose. You have lost 19 lbs. which is approximately 30% of your excess weight (your chart indicates that you have 43 more lbs. to lose)!! That's phenomenal. You should be proud of making that happen. If you had 100 lbs. to lose and lost 30%, you'd be looking at a THIRTY pound loss! So please be kind to your body. It will lose its excess weight with the assistance of more fills, exercise, and healthy eating. But your body's schedule for losing the weight may not be in sync with your desires. Hang in there!
  4. Hi, everyone! I'm new at this and am still on soup and protein drinks and haven't had my first fill. I've been reading everything you're all writing about this. But here's my question: I absolutely cannot consume more than 1/2 cup of "full liquids" without experiencing excruciating pain in my shoulder. You all have counseled that when we get to the solid food stage, we should be eating 3-4 oz. of protein, 1/4 c. each of veggies/fruit and starches for each meal plus 2 snacks per day, 25 grams of fiber, 6-8 glasses of liquid. Were you all able to consume this amount as soon as you started eating solid foods or was it a process of slowly being able to consume that amount? I'm concerned about being able to get the necessary amount of nutrients. If this level of restriction continues, should I get a fill in 6-8 weeks? Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions.
  5. Thank you so much for your reply, NicoleK! That really gives me some perspective of what I can expect during this process. I guess it can be difficult to get adequate nutrition. Thanks again and congrats on your amazing progress!!
  6. Hi! Thanks so much for the responses. I will check the other posts. But one more question, NicoleK: Are you still able to eat only 1/2 cup of food at a time? A couple of other posts have said that once we get to solid food, we should be eating 1/2 cup of protein plus 1/4 cup each of fruit/veg and starch. I would be in agony if I ate that amount all at once. A lot of other people seem to suggest that they are able to eat more than 1/2 cup at a time. What's up? Will I continue to experience this limitation? Is this what people refer to as "restriction?" I don't feel the pain/restriction when the food is going down. Only afterward. Thanks for your advice and wisdom!
  7. Hi, everyone! I'm new at this and am wondering if anyone has experienced this and if it's normal? I'm about 10 days out from surgery, drinking creamy soups and "whole liquids." However, if I drink more than 1/2 cup at a time of soup or protein drinks, I get the most excruciating collarbone/shoulder pain that lasts for over an hour. The liquids don't hurt going down and I think I'm okay. However, within about 15 minutes, the pain begins. Now I'm afraid to drink! Any advice from you veterans?
  8. Hi! I did ask Dr. Miranda that very question last week. She told me that I could drink red wine after 3 weeks, i.e, once I begin to eat solid food. I didn't ask her about other liquor.
  9. I got banded last week, too, and have gained 3.5 lbs. since surgery. I'm totally following the program of drinking clear liquids and am taking solace in the posts that counsel patience. But, still, it's a bummer. Hang in there! Let us know when the weight starts to drop!
