  1. I have scheduled my VSG surgery for 9/19/18. Hope to meet new sleeve friends on this journey
  2. Its been a long time since I posted. We are so active over on Facebook these days where interaction occurs immediately, that blogs just aren't what they used to be... But I intend to start posting here more, because the information is easy to find and more permanent, so I want to start updating here more. I get a lot of private messages from people asking how i've done with my sleeve, how i've REALLY done long term... i think so many things have failed for us over the years, that we are afraid to believe that this could really work and be long lasting. I had an appointment yesterday with my doctor, and I was cold so I had on jeans, tank, shirt, sweater, scarf, and heavy socks and boots... so i was seriously winter dressed(don't we all usually wear "lightweight clothes" when we know we are going to get weighed lol)... weight on scale fully clothed was 147.1. I'm 5'7, the jeans I was wearing were a 6 (i go between 4 & 6 and an occasional 8 depending on brand and how i want it to fit. I had my sleeve surgery 4/12/2012 so i'm almost 6 years out (my original band surgery was 6/2006 you'll find more info on that in my blog) . I did go under 140 for a short time (naked weight) after my surgery, but it was too skinny for me (and way too skinny for my hubby!) - i'm really happy mid-140's and haven't had trouble maintaining this. So it really DOES work... you have to work it too... but when I say I love my sleeve, I really do love my sleeve! If you want more information please visit our website www.obesitycontrolcenter.com or our Facebook page (check out the video section!) https://www.facebook.com/OCCMedicalCenter/ or call our toll free # 1-866-376-7849 ext. 1 to speak with one of our Patient Coordinators.
  3. I am seriously considering gastric sleeve surgery at OCC with Dr Ortiz. I do not qualify in the US because my Bmi is 31, although it might as well be 51. I am so uncomfortable in my own skin and have been for 20 yrs. Exercise, dieting, food logging and everything in between isn't getting me out of the obese category and I'm so tired of it. I have so many questions and hope that some o you can help with the answers. Here are some of them: In your opinion, Does the hospital/clinic at OCC abide by the same standards as found in the US? Do you know if the facility is inspected making sure it's up to par? How do I know that I will be getting the gastric sleeve that was agreed upon and with the correct closure? Following surgery how can they tell if there is no leakage? X-ray? Ultrasound? Occ and Dr Ortiz have an outstanding marketing website but how do I know that they are legitimate from 3,000 miles away? Is the sleeve safe for older women? I am 58 yrs old and all I see are older blogs from much younger females. Does the staff speak English? What happens if my lab work doesn't pass the day before surgery? Not likely, but wondering How many days should I plan for the entire process? How is the Marriot hotel that my husband will be staying in. Is it worn and old? As you can see I'm a bit narotic and my daughters are not so happy with me looking into Tijuana. I appreciate your thoughts and responses. It is such a big decision. Thank you, Gigi

    Considering OCC in fall 2016

I am seriously considering surgery at OCC because I do not qualify in the US. My Bmi is 31, however it might as well be 51. I am so uncomfortable in my own skin that I need to do something. Excercise, dieting and food logging isn't getting me out of the obese category! My questions: Does the hospital at OCC abide by the same or similar standards as US hospitals? Is it inspected by a team to make certain that it's up to par? How often? How do I know I will be getting the gastric sleeve that was agreed upon? Following surgery, how can they tell if there is no leakage? OCC's & Dr. Ariel Ortiz have outstanding marketing. How do I know for sure that they are legitimate? Is the sleeve surgery safe for older females? I am 58 and I see blogs from much younger people. Does the staff speak English ? What happens if my pre-op lab work doesn't pass the day before surgery? How many days should I plan for surgery before flying home? I appreciate your responses. Gigi
  5. Mexico has required FMM forms for traveling to Mexico by air for a long time, technically it was required for land travel into Mexico but was not being enforced. Lately the Mexican government has been enforcing this rule. When traveling to OCC for any reason, please make sure you have your Passport or Passport Card, plus have a stamped copy of the FMM form with you - you'll need to stop at customs coming into Mexico to have this stamped even if you are driving yourself, or walking across the border. The OCC Driver always stops at Customs and patients go through customs, but make sure you ask the Customs Officer to stamp your FMM form. Often they will try to waive you through, but ask them to please stamp your FMM form. You will not be admitted into the hospital without it (the law states we have to check for it now!). If an official asks to see your stamped FMM form you must produce it. You can pre-fill out this FMM form online and print it as long as your passport is valid for more then 6 months after your planned travel dates, and as long as you are traveling within 30 days of completing the form. If your passport expires within 6 months you can't fill it out online and will have to complete it at the Customs Office. This is a requirement for anyone traveling with you as well. If you have any questions about the required documentation please call our concierge at 1-866-376-7849 ext. 80. Here is the link to the FMM Form online - use the option for Land Travel: https://www.inm.gob.mx/fmme/publico/en/solicitud.html#

  7. CELEBRATE Good Times C'mon.... let's celebrate! woohoooooooo 3 years ago I had by Sleeve surgery - my band to sleeve revision surgery. I can tell you I haven't regretted it for a single solitary second! I still love my sleeve. I love what is has allowed me to do... I'm at a healthy weight, my cholesterol is 115... 9 years ago it was over 240. I feel great and... ok ok... i get to buy clothes off the really cute rack... usually in a small or medium. If you've read my blog you know I had my band surgery back in 2006, and I did well with it for quite awhile... then I got derailed through a series of accidents, surgeries, no walking for months, band wide open, and lots of really good church lady food. I needed a change... enter the <ahhhhh> sleeve surgery. I loved my band, but I will tell you - I love my sleeve more.... its a much more natural restriction, i can eat whatever I want (within reason!) just in smaller quantities... no worries about food getting stuck, I just fill up really fast. Thanks to OCC and Dr. Ortiz, today, I am at a very health 5'7 and average around 140 pounds. I'll be FIFTY this year....<shudder> and I honestly feel worlds better then I did when I hit 40. My husband and I celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary next week.... in Cancun. I am taking 7 bathing suits for our 6 day trip - almost all of them are 2 piece (nothing too skimpy... the sleeve didn't give me 20 year old thighs people!) but 10 years ago i would never have considered spending all day in a bathing suit at the pool or beach... but that's what I'll be doing all of next week (with a fabulous faux tan and a lot of sunscreen and one of those big floppy hats and oversized sunglasses... again i'm almost 50 people...) Thank you for sharing this day with me... and happy sleeviversary to my sleeve sista Emily, too - we've walked this journey together (and she has a baby to show for it!) If you have any questions about my journey or weight loss surgery you can reach me at lori@obesitycontrolcenter.com or 1-866-376-7849 ext. 81.

    Safety in Tijuana

I am getting a sleeve in May!! Yay!! However, my brother expressed some concern about the safety issues that exist in Tijuana right now. Does anyone have any insight as to the area that the OCC clinic is located and any safety issues that exist there? Also, any safety issues with crossing the border? Thanks!

Plication surgery date Jul 17 2011

So I thought I would blog about my experience with gastric plication because before the surgery I had a hard time finding someone with circumstances similar to mine. What makes my situation unique is that I was over weight and obese "clinically" however in terms of what most people consider overweight needing surgery I probably wouldn't have made the list. But I certainly did make the "fat" list in my own mind and I was more sick of hating myself and weight, and felt so defeated with my efforts. So at 5'3" and 175 lbs I had a really hard time finding anyone on-line in youtube blogs or otherwise that I could compare myself to. I qualified for placation surgery because my BMI was 30, just the minimum. When I was doing my research on the surgery I decided to book the surgery because there is a strong history of diabetes in my family, I had dieted and worked out for a solid 6 months and dropped a lousy 20 lbs, and as soon as I stopped the unmanageable work-out routine I piled all the 20 lbs back on and because I have a job in PR and whether I like it or not people are always judging you on your appearance and it does effect my bottom line. So prior to my surgery these are the things that I told myself to convince myself that I was making the right decision. My husband on the other hand, wanted to hear nothing of this procedure business. He was adamant from the get-go that I didn't need the surgery my weight problem was more of a confidence problem that was in my head and he was adamant that I looked good, not to mention the surgery came with a $7500 price tag and a flight to Mexico. He was almost most furious when he heard that it was in Mexico. I did my research, I'd been to Mexico many times before and wasn't so fearful of having the surgery there, I was pretty confident that the Doctors were more than qualified. So I booked my surgery. Because my BMI was low I didn't have to do the pre-surgery diet, all I had to do was liquids 48 hours before surgery. I went to Mexico alone, I wouldn't do that part again. I felt really lonely, that was a very hard low time for me. I don't deal with pain well, and following the surgery I was nauseous from the anesthetic, I just wouldn't wish to repeat that experience alone again. The week following surgery I thought I'd go right back to work, but I ended up taking about 3 days off to sleep and recoup because it was harder then I was expecting it to be. The first 3 weeks after the surgery was so devastated, I couldn't really eat anything, and I was thinking what the hell did I do to myself? I hadn't lost but 10 lbs no one had noticed and I was miserable, I was down on myself too because I felt like "how did I ever let myself hate my body and weight enough that I went to that extreme", I think if it had been something I could have reversed at that time I would have. Now I will post a lot more about specifics since the surgery but I will say this, I no longer feel that way at all. I'm almost 5 months post-op and I've lost 30 lbs so far, my goal is to get down to 120lbs, I'm at 140lb so I have another 20 lbs to go, but I'm over the moon. Specific things I am happiest about: -My sex life is much better, I'm so much more confident, I'm no longer embarrassed about being naked in front of my husband -I went into Victoria Secret last week and asked the sales associate to help me reach a large night gown and she looked at me and said "For you? No way your a medium or small" That felt so damn good, that's never happened to me before! - I feel for the first time in my life like I have control, in the past I felt in control of everything but my weight and now I feel complete I will blog more about my experience since surgery, in the meantime if you have any questions or want to know anything specifically please message me, thanks for reading .
