  1. CELEBRATE Good Times C'mon.... let's celebrate! woohoooooooo 3 years ago I had by Sleeve surgery - my band to sleeve revision surgery. I can tell you I haven't regretted it for a single solitary second! I still love my sleeve. I love what is has allowed me to do... I'm at a healthy weight, my cholesterol is 115... 9 years ago it was over 240. I feel great and... ok ok... i get to buy clothes off the really cute rack... usually in a small or medium. If you've read my blog you know I had my band surgery back in 2006, and I did well with it for quite awhile... then I got derailed through a series of accidents, surgeries, no walking for months, band wide open, and lots of really good church lady food. I needed a change... enter the <ahhhhh> sleeve surgery. I loved my band, but I will tell you - I love my sleeve more.... its a much more natural restriction, i can eat whatever I want (within reason!) just in smaller quantities... no worries about food getting stuck, I just fill up really fast. Thanks to OCC and Dr. Ortiz, today, I am at a very health 5'7 and average around 140 pounds. I'll be FIFTY this year....<shudder> and I honestly feel worlds better then I did when I hit 40. My husband and I celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary next week.... in Cancun. I am taking 7 bathing suits for our 6 day trip - almost all of them are 2 piece (nothing too skimpy... the sleeve didn't give me 20 year old thighs people!) but 10 years ago i would never have considered spending all day in a bathing suit at the pool or beach... but that's what I'll be doing all of next week (with a fabulous faux tan and a lot of sunscreen and one of those big floppy hats and oversized sunglasses... again i'm almost 50 people...) Thank you for sharing this day with me... and happy sleeviversary to my sleeve sista Emily, too - we've walked this journey together (and she has a baby to show for it!) If you have any questions about my journey or weight loss surgery you can reach me at lori@obesitycontrolcenter.com or 1-866-376-7849 ext. 81.

  3. I will be going into my 6th year of my lapband in March, and thought I'd post an update. I can't believe it's been 5 years, and I've been maintaining my weight (with little ups, mostly downs) over the past few years! I'm currently at my all time low, 128lbs, that I've been easily and happily maintaining for about a year now. I most recently purchased a pair of 26" jeans. Never ever did I think I was that small. (reality is difficult) I definitely struggle daily with body dysmorphia. My mind & body most content at this weight, so I'm extremely pleased. Most recently had an ultrasound that was able to confirm my band and port are in perfect place. Thank god. There is always a LOT of talk of the band slipping, rotting, ect ... I've had absolutely no issues with that. I mentally struggle every single day, but my anxiety attacks are minimal (which were normally brought on my body imagine issues) and being in social situations. The only real disadvantage to having this lapband, is that the ONLY private clinic in my city (Toronto) went bankrupt over 2 years. So I'm unable to get unfills done locally. The hospital gastric dept is VERY VERY hesitant to touch me or my band because they weren't the ones who inserted it. Fair enough. I completely understand. I haven't had it adjusted in 4 years. I wish I had easily access to adjustments as there are times were I know I should be taking in a lot more calories. ... In the summer, when I'm extremely active, or on vacation (and I eat a LOT less and don't have easy access to my usual safe foods) my weight can easily drop down to 122-125lbs which is too low for my height (i'm 5'9"). I have no plans on having children, so the lack of access to getting adjustments isn't an issue on that front. At times I'm tired of not eating. I wish I could eat a BURGER. Or finish a milk shake. That can get really exhausting, especially when socially, everything seems to be based on drinking and eating. That's the most difficult part ... just sitting and watching and redirecting any obvious attention that I don't eat a lot. This post is a bit all over the place, but this is the truth of my experience. Being on the lapband 'bandwagon' 5 years ago when it was the newest and best thing was amazing, and I feel incredibly blessed that I worked so well for me. But my body imagine issues will always be there and shadowing everything else. That's the one major part that getting the surgery done at this clinic (vs others, that provide A LOT of talk-therapy support). It's safe to say that the majority of us DO have a lot of underlying issues, which need to be dealt for long term success. There is a lot more to it than just reaching your goal weight. I've spent a fortune on therapy. While other clinics include it in the surgery treatment. I never accounted or thought of that additional cost when going to the OCC. This is something that's completely changed my life, and given me a real opportunity to become the person I want to be. Inside and out.

From the album: My Past, Present & Progress!

5 years post op - lapband
  5. Ok so I am hoping to have the the vertical sleeve procedure (if I can get over my fears) and I was just wondering what is a realistic goal for weight loss with the surgery. I am 5'2 and 240 lbs. Is anyone willing to share their weight loss stats after having the VSG with Dr. Ortiz with me so I can see what is realistic? Also for the veterans out there have you found it easier to maintain your goal weight now that you have had the surgery compared to before having the surgery or is it still a battle to maintain? I lost 80lbs on my own but only was able to maintain it for 3 months before putting it all back on plus some just want to know if VSG is only a good tool for helping to loose the weight or if it also helps with maintenance? I totally get that you have to change your lifestyle and how you eat, but want to know that this will definitely be helpful "tool" before going under the knife!
  6. Well all things considered I am doing ok. I have been frustrated as of late with the lack of loss I have been seeing. While I am trying to remain positive about not gaining anything, which I have learned is more than half the battle sometimes, not losing even 1/2 a pound in the last 7 days is to say the least bothersome. I have been counting my calories aggressively and am taking in 600 to 1000 cal a day. I'm going to try and chalk it up to hormones and water weight but even with that I would expect some kind of loss. I can now eat just about whatever I want just A LOT LESS than I used to . I eat three meals a day and 2 snacks and have to admit I struggle getting in all my fluids. I can usually do at least 40 oz but up to 64 is hard for me when you eat every three hours. I am still at a total loss of 30 lbs from 2 months ago which I am so proud of. My goal is 10 lbs a month but I will take any loss at this point. I feel better and am more comfortable so I am on my way towards my goal of not being so limited physically and uncomfortable. I promised myself I would not be so number focused but when you go through so much you cant help but want to see numbers. I know this has been worth it, for nothing other than to get myself under control. I was going no where fast but I am just holding on to the fact that as long as I lose something, (whether it takes me 10 months or 10 years) thats better then staying where I was or worse....gaining more.
  7. Well it has been 16 days post op and things have definitely started to improve from the pain standpoint. The cramping that was so bad is now gone for the most part and is really only problematic if I get too hungry. I had to move through the liquid phase much faster as I learned that, for me, my cramping was worse without something of substance in my stomach. I started to puree my food around day 13 to a watery consistency working my way up to baby food consistency over the next few days and am now eating very soft foods like scrambled eggs. For me, this has been helpful. Keep in mind I can eat only about 2-3 Tbs at a time but this seems to keep the cramping at bay as well as the gas. I don't recommend this for everyone else as their is a reason the diet is to be followed as prescribed by OCC, it was just I had to do something on my own to alleviate the cramping. My weight loss is finally starting to move in the right direction, and thank goodness for that, as eating 600 calories a day better do something!! I started out at 274 three weeks prior to surgery and was 256 the day of. 262 the day after (fluids from the IV), 256 7 days post op, right around 250 14 days out and today am 246 16 days post op. When I average the loss it is about 3 pounds a week right now. I know this will slow down as the weight loss continues and my BMR comes down due to the loss but at this point I just want to live as normal as a life as possible. It has been quite an adjustment for me to learn the feeling of fulness, To be honest, I could eat well beyond full prior to my surgery, and would do so on a regular basis. This tool (the plication) has given me great incentive to not over due things. I DO NOT want to throw up or be in total misery because of overeating, so I really try to listen to myself about when enough is enough. It is just hard to believe that 2-3 Tbs of food is enough when you are used to eating 2-3 cups of something. I've learned other tricks to not stretch my plication or make myself sick. It has been very difficult to get over the whole not eating and drinking at the same time and to wait 45 minutes after eating to drink. I found a timer app for my phone and set it for 45 minutes at my last bite so I know when it is ok for me to start drinking. It hard to get 64 oz of liquid in when you don't drink at meals! I will keep working on keeping focused. Now that I have lost close to 30 lbs people are starting to notice. (I am 6 feet tall so it took some time for it to be noticeable) when people start to notice it starts to get more fun. It's also more fun when you can breath better and tie your shoes easier!

    Busy Busy - but success!!!

I'm sorry I haven't been posting too often, my youngest is graduating Jr. High today so the last 2 weeks have been extremely hectic! I'm looking forward to next week when I won't have to wish for a magic wand so I can be 2 places at once! I just wanted to report, that I got on the scale today, and I'm down 30 pounds so far! Lower then I ever got with my band and not even 2 months out from my sleeve revision. I haven't decided on where I'd like to end up, I think I'll let my body tell me as I lose weight. I know the weight loss will be slower now. I'm 5'7 and at 164 - so getting close to where I'd like to end up. My "bathroom issues" are not yet gone, but have improved some. I go back to my doctor next week to review the test results (I was hoping for this week but he is out of town) I think so much of it has to do with stress... its now over 2 months since my husband lost his job, and we haven't made any strides in that department... so for any of you that are praying people, I would love you to include that in your prayers. I know God will provide! That's all I have time for now, taking 1/2 a day off today so spend the afternoon getting my babygirl ready for her graduation tonight In case you have any doubts... I'm LOVING my sleeve! Take care and have a blessed day!
  9. Started at 242, male, 41, lost 10 before surgery and now down to 210 6 weeks after surgery. 20 pounds lost only after the surgery??? Seems too little for the measures I took for the surgery. I hope the weight loss kicks in again.
