"Sick" of Broth

I'm three days post-op. It's WAY too early to be sick of chicken broth, I know. But the mere thought of drinking another cup of broth makes me sick to my stomach! My poor mom made the soup from scratch, I hope I didn't hurt her feelings when I said the thought of eating it makes me nauseous! I tried to substitute a popsicle for dinner, but that didn't last long, and I started feeling nauseous from not eating. Right now I'm drinking the broth, telling myself "it tastes great!!" like it did the first day post op. Not sure how I am going to survive two weeks of this!!

Here's what's on the menu-

chicken broth (homemade even!)

french onion soup broth (no onions)

japanese soup broth (tastes kinda like soy sauce soup)

fruit popsicles

Jello

Is this really all there is to eat? Ideas anyone? Tomorrow I am going to the store to drain a can of vegetable soup and make broth out of that, but even that only sounds temporarily delicious.

Any ideas or just plain comfort and support would be appreciated! :)

On a side note... I had a dream I won a fried chicken sandwich in a contest. The thing looked absolutely wonderful and all I could do was stare at it and say, "I can't eat that!" Later my husband came home (he had taken the kids out to dinner) smelling like fried chicken. Sure enough, he'd had chicken fried steak for dinner. Ugh! ;)

Hi Nancyotr,

Wow I can't imagine going back to work already. I too have a pretty active job that requires me to drive around all day long. Getting in and out of the car repeatedly would probably kill me right now, not to mention I'm kinda scared to drive. But yes, I hear you about the liquid diet. I forced myself to down some chicken broth this morning. I know I have to eat. My mom had an idea to go to a local Mexican restaurant and order the chicken tortilla soup and just eat the broth part. Sounds good to me! Anything different sounds good.

Some people say their doctors let them have full liquids (cream based soups, protein shakes etc) at 1 week post op. Why do we have to suffer another week? :) I'm thinking of begging my doctor at 1 week if I feel up to it...

OK...Whip cream is NOT ALL bad...with your jello add just a tad..can is better for a treat. Have a 4 oz glass of FF milk with SF choclate syrup, Cottage Cheese with a good flavored yogurt mixed in it , you can make instant potato's runny enough to count as soup....Cheese soup is OK too. What are you clear liquids or just liquids and Strained liquids? Beef broth is a nice Change. I did Veggie broth with potato flakes and a little dab of butter. Or teaspoon of sour cream...ALSO on the health section or organic section you can find broth hehe....its s secret...NOT if I know about it. I found Mushroom broth a little bit of it went a long way in my beef or chicken broth...It is strong...to much makes it yuckie. But just enough was soooo nice for a little change. Also Atkins advantage shakes are perfect for protien too..and only 1 carb and not the worst thing you ahve ever tasted..lol...I also found a great water mix in ..SF...its NEW it is a daily allowance of multi vitamins. (strawberry tangerine flavor..its awesome....

Thanks for the ideas Stacie! Unfortunately I am still in the clear liquids stage. My doctor wants me on clear liquids for TWO weeks!! :(( Is it any wonder I've lost almost 20 pounds since pre-op? Coulda done this without the pain of lapband surgery lol....

Unfortunately I cannot yet eat some of the things you suggested. However, I am allowed skim milk. The SF chocolate mixed in isn't a bad idea! I might try it to see how I "stomach" it, no pun intended!

Thanks for your help.

If you had your surgery done by Dr. Ortiz, she told us after 3 days, we can start on liquid yogurt, protien shakes, etc, creamy soups (FF milk though, homemade, not from the box, etc, because of the calories. And, then after 7 days, basically anything pureed in a blender. You get a lot more flavors. It's not easy but doable.

Hang in there, you went through a lot, and spent a lot of money to lose weight, when you start adding things, you can get very creative.

Ah thanks Teri. It's so funny to me how the length of the clear liquids stage varies from doctor to doctor. Even my mother, a former RN who worked the post-op floor of a hospital, was surprised to hear I had to stay on clear liquids for two weeks.

I doubt I will make it through two weeks of clear liquids. I think I am doing well despite still having some port discomfort. I will probably sneak in a thicker liquid now and then to see how I do.

Someone should sticky a recipe section on here!! Is there something like that on this forum, and I've just missed it? Post-op lapbanders can be really creative with their meals, I bet! :)

Hot tea is also a great sub... and you can add splenda or your choice...Most dr want caffine free though. I bought an awesome Blueberry tea. it was almost like a treat and I could have it all I want. I also got vanilla almond, strawberry passion, white peach, ....I bought anout 7 kinds Celestial makes many Caf free....And totally worth the price. Try one or 2 of those ...may help the crave a little. Tea is very filling like water and we all know how sick of water we get...OMgooooodness....8 glasses a day....UGH.....plus protien shakes 3 a day for that 60g of protien needed to help the healing of your band. Hang tough....I did 3 wks after plus 10 days before. I ate alot of SF bomb pops and tropical sf popsicles....lol...the bomb pop are the best if you can find them. I know Kroger and walmart nab market carry them.

When I had surgery Dr. Miranda said 7 days of clear liquids and 2 weeks of full - on clear we could have full strength juices as its not about weight loss at that point -it's getting some calories and nourishment so you can heal - grape juice was wonderful, orange juice super duper and i believe she even approved sugar free hot cocoa. I also hate broth but liked the ramen noodle broth best - i would let the popsicles melt and practically drink them. oh yeah and i hated tomoate juice until banding and have loved it since. if its too thick water it down and that is very filling.

Whatever you do - now is the time to stick/follow the diet - even if you chew to goo your stomach still will have to work to get it through (it doesnt matter that it might not hurt or it seems ok - it isn't)

don't mess up now - we all cheat and make mistakes or we wouldn't need the band but dont do it at this stage - you are healing and want that band to stay in place.

Thanks Queen. I just don't know how I'm supposed to get 60g of protein eating nothing but broth. I'm not allowed protein shakes. For some reason skim milk is on my doctor's approved clear liquids list, although I've never heard of this before, have you? I asked about FF SF hot chocolate and they said no. Funny considering skim milk is okay.

Mom and I went to our favorite Chinese restaurant today. The wonton broth was to die for. I've eaten it twice today.

Very good point Queen! Thanks for bringing that up.

For some reason I've gotten the hiccups four times today. I sure hope hiccuping isn't going to hurt the band. It hurts to hiccup.

Hi I am having procedure on 3/12. My job is also very demanding and active. I am a psychiatric rehabilitation specialist with very little time in my schedule. I am concerned about trying to fulfill the dietary requirements while at work. I have managed to arrange for a 45 minute lunch break daily which is quite a luxary considering that i used to take lunch 2-3 times a week for 20 minutes, gobbling down food.

Hi,

I am wondering the same thing? How are you suppose to get enough (60-64g) protein drinking broth? I am having procedure on 3/12.

I haven't gotten my band yet, but as for broth, I made a cabbage type, all vegi soup as I'm on the liquid stage of pre-op. I also cooked chicken and hamburger for my family to add to theirs. I drank the broth which was quite good, then added 1 packet of TacoBell hot sauce, Wow was it really good. I froze a container to use when I get home from surgery on March 23. Can't wait. The days are SOOOOOO

LOOOOONNGGG

http://www.unjury.com has a chicken broth that's actually quite good :)

GNC has clear Isopure in glass bottles that has protein. I ordered these and they actually taste a LOT better than the Isopure IMO and you get a lot of protein in less than 3OZ - they are clear and not "jello-y" so as far as I can tell, they are OK on the pure liquid portion. I haven't had any trouble:

I agree---the Isopure is protein in clear liquid form, comes in many flavors, and takes good to me. If I was on clears for 2 weeks (I was only for 3 days), Isopure would be my protein solution. Available at most GNC's and Vitamin Shoppe's.

Actually I was saying I didn't like the Isopure but DO like the Protica ;) The Isopure has a wierd taste to me and leaves a gunky like feeling in my mouth. But a lot of folks love it :)
