  1. My fiance didn't know he had a hiatal hernia and Dr. Ortiz repaired it during the VSG surgery.
  2. Hi Folks, I'm 4 week post-op for the VSG. I haven't lost any weight for the past 2 weeks. Anyone else experience a stall like this shortly after their surgery? It's pretty discouraging.
  3. Hi! We were at the OCC last July and will be heading back there in less than 2 weeks. We felt safe when we were at the Marriott Hotel and surrounding area (Wal-Mart and a shopping plaza nearby the hotel). The OCC itself is located near the police station. The OCC has a security guard that monitors vehicles entering the parking garage. We also noticed him walking through the building, stopping into the OCC and other areas around the building. The Marriott shuttle can take you back and forth to the OCC. We did use a taxi a few times to go other places (shopping plaza and the beach). We had no issues. When we crossed the border into Mexico, the shuttle driver dropped us off and we went through security. Not many people around and the security guard didn't even look through our suitcases. When we crossed the border into the U.S. the line-up was quite long and they did a very thorough inspection of us and our suitcases. I felt very safe and we had no issues.
  4. Hi! Ask Lori, the coordinator. She is wonderful about answering any and all questions.
  5. Thanks! It's always nice to hear some words of advice from someone who is a few years post-op. My fiancé had his VSG last summer so he's only 6 months post-op. And I know my experience will not necessarily be the same as his. I think I am most concerned about a complication after I leave the clinic and not having a doctor in my hometown who is familiar with bariatric procedures. Did you have any complications?
  6. Hi! I'm interested in hearing from some "senior" VSGers. Anyone out there who've had the procedure by Dr. Ortiz at the OCC 5+ year ago? I'm interested in hearing about any challenges you've encountered after the first few years of having the procedure. Advice, words of wisdom, words of caution. I've found lots of people 1 or 2 years post-op, but not many 5+ year out. Looking forward to hearing from you!
  7. I am from Fredericton, New Brunswick. My fiance had the VSG July 2013 by Dr. Ortiz. I am going for the same in February 2014. Good experience with OCC last July. Dr. Ortiz is an excellent surgeon. He repaired my fiance's hiatal hernia (my fiance didn't even know he had one) during the VSG surgery. Our only concern was that a couple of the nurses could not understand/speak English very well, so at times there was a language barrier. However, Dr. So is AWESOME and will answer all your post-op medication questions. He is a gem. We asked for the post-op medication list from Lori (coordinator) prior to going to Tijuana because our extended health plan covers medications. There was only 1 medication that we couldn't take with us to the surgery. This saved us a few dollars since the OCC charge you for the post-op medications when you are discharged. Suggestions? - Pack light. Crossing the border into the U.S. is way easier when you're pushing someone in a wheelchair with a light suitcase vs. a heavy one! - Get your post-op medications ahead of time and take them with you to Tijuana if you have coverage here at home. - Take an iPad or tablet and sign up for Netflix! My fiance would watch a 1/2 hour show on Netflix, go for a 10 minute walk, and repeat. Makes the time go easier and helps you get walking after the surgery. - At the Marriott restaurant, make sure you ask for the "OCC soup" or "OCC popsicle". There is no charge for these items. The restaurant staff are all very good at knowing what is and isn't included free of charge for the OCC patients.
