Thinking about plication

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm looking into getting gastric plication with Dr. Ortiz and was wondering if anyone around my size (185-190lbs.) has had great success with it. I've seem some amazing photos with people who had more to lose or who were banded but since this procedure it relatively new there aren't as many success stories. I'd love to hear yours.

Also, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Med Loan Finance? I'm thinking $3000 in fees and interest is bit steep. It would be great to hear some input.

Keep up the good work. Keep the faith. Continue being awesome!

Thanks!

Shaun Marie

WOW! $3000 in fees and interest is nuts. Didn't they outlaw "LOAN SHARKING"! LOL

I think if you got a loan on your credit card it wouldn't even be that high. But I'm not an expert on loans. Any members have any better ideas for Shaun Marie?

Hi Shaun Marie, I had my plication surgery on Jan 27, 2011 at OCC. I weighed 211 on January 10/11.............198.01 on surgery day................today's weigh in was 171.4 I have had a stall, and Dr Mirnada's gave me some suggestions to break that plateau. Really I don't think I've ever been on any diet plan that didn't have some sort of several 'stalls aka plateau'. In my case I think some of it had to do with my body recognizing those mid 170's as I weighed that for quite a number of years before my weight balloned. Having plication was the best thing I ever did for myself. I was a self pay so sorry I can't speak to fees and interest on a Med Loans/financing. Good Luck, Katie:)

I hope you can firgure out some sort of options for money to acheive your dream. this is a hard place to come and to get a response like you recived is not nice. For some it takes a lot of guts to post on this forum to get information and help pre op.

Maybe people from the sounds of it have done many diffrent things to get the3 money, borrow from 401K, refinance house, take out a person loan from bank, use a credit card....etc

If you don't have any credit card debt and this is soemthing you would be intrested in financing I would lookinto getting a new card with either 0% or low intrest for a fixed time and then pay as much as you can before that dead line is of the lower intrest rate.

Hi

I had plication on Oct 2010 and till this day i have lost 20 pounds

This is not worthy of the money that you pay

I was also 189 and now I'm 169 the Occ called me i told them about my problem and i have to have it done again

And trust me I tried to do all the exercise I could Eating almost nothing and I can not loose the weight

So before you spend all that money do your search

And remember the less you weight the less you loose

Please think about it before spending all that money for 20 pounds

Sorry for being such party pooper. But is the true

I'm seeing that people who did they plication have been losing weight very quickly the first week or so after the surgery and then they stop. Anyone would lose a lot of weight if all they drank was a VLC liquid diet. Are you sure that's not all the weight loss is? Seems like there are many people out there who are not thrilled with the results. I think I'm more confused than ever. =(

what's true for the plication is true for any of the weight loss surgeries, some people do very well, very quickly, and for others it takes longer. The other truth.... those that are doing really well with any of the surgeries, don't always come back to support and talk about how they are doing, they are on their way, no issues, great weight loss, and they don't always need our support, so we don't see them on the boards...

its true that some of the plication revision patients (band to plication) weren't seeing the kind of weight loss we'd like to see, so we take care of them and can do a little tightening of the plication. We are now recommending the sleeve revision over the plication revision as previous band patients seem to do a bit better with the sleeve over the plication. But our "virgin" plication patients seem to be doing very well... although sleeves do tend to lose a bit more weight than plication patients. In fact, sleeve is on par with bypass as far as weight loss goes.

as always, any questions you have feel free to contact me!

Hello everyone! I've been seriously considering a bariatric procedure and just recently heard about plication. HOwever, there isn't much research out there, nor many long term success stories. I'm currently at a 30 BMI and was told that plication may be my best option. Does anyone know where I can find any extensive research? Other than private doctor sites promoting their services? I read somwehre on this forum that a girl lost all of 20 lbs since Oct 2010 and felt it was a waste... definitely not encouraging. so I'd like to get more info... Thanks!!!

Hi Rainedrop......I had my plication done on Jan 27/11 at OCC. Plication is somewhat new to North America but has been done in Brazil and the Middle East for over 10 years. Dr Ortiz has done 300+. I think as with any WLS there are some who do really well and others who do not. I really think it's very individual. I watch a lot of YOU TUBE videos of various people who have had everything from RNY, to lapband to sleeve to plication. I heard something the other day by LT, she said....I only lost 1 pound this week but then I really didn't do anything to earn any more weight loss. That peaked my interest because I think with any WLS it does take work after the surgery. Really the surgery is one tool added to the list of things we can do to elimate our excess weight. I was 211lbs on Jan 10/11, ..198.01 on day of surgery(we all need to shed a few pounds before surgery, if you want to know exactly why, just ask me). My last weight in on Friday I was 171.8. I lost the majority of that weight in the first 2.5 months. Then after that it has been slower. In all honesty I know I could be doing more to push my weight loss along..things like being more deligient in writing down my daily intake..increasing my water intake to more than the usual 64oz, walking more, or just going to the gym more. I know cause I asked her, this is what LT meant with her YT comment. I do watch the videos for helpful hints and have gotten many many from there. You might want to check out plication.org, as it has a lot of general info on the surgery from serveral different sources. Also you didn't mention your current weight....BMI or 30 doesn't really say how much overweight you are. So try the YT source, and talk to a couple of surgerons.............ask how many WLS they have done in totally, how many plications..........I believe I paid as much for my surgeon's expereince as I did for the surgery itself.......what their complication rate is...and if it's like Dr Ortiz which is zero with plication, then ask why is he so different. I wrote down all my questions, and as more came up during my research, I asked those too. No questions is going to sound to small or silly.........If there are other questions you want to ask me, and wish to email me ...my email address is ktbaillargeon@gmail.com.......just put rainedrop in the subject heading so I know it's from you, Good luck K:)

Hello, my husband & I were plicated on the 9th. We did have some nausea & vomiting issues & had stay an extra night. But things are starting to feel better. I've lost 5 lbs post op, but my husband is nearly 18 lbs. I hate that men lose weight faster..... As far as Med Loan, we had to use them. For $13,500 in credit, we paid nearly $900 to med loan for their "processing" fee. $3000 is high, but you have to consider the overall benefits of the surgery (especially if you don't have any other finance options). Think of the smaller food bills & your healthier life!!

I am a firm believer in save first BUT this isn't about that!!! Health is important in order that we CAN go earn money to pay our bills. Being miserable, having pain just to walk through a store, aching knees, back and numerous illnesses that come along with being overweight just don't allow us to meet our potential.

IF you can find a way...any way to improve your life...go for it. Be sure to leave no stone unturned in your quest to do what ever it takes to make yourself healthier...the happier and thinner come with time and are good side effects of being healthier.

Everyone REMEMBER this is a forum to SUPPORT and ENCOURAGE each other. Negative only breeds negative.

The plication surgery is a tool to help people lose weight. However it is not a fix for everything mental and emotional. It still needs to be coupled with smart choices, exercise and stress relief. There is a reason we all gain weight. The root emotional cause is not taken away by having surgery.

I began working with a therapist after my surgery to discuss stress control, feeling of being overwhelmed by life, anxiety and communication wtih my spouse. I have lost about 10 lbs per month since Feb.

I highly encourage anyone who knows that there is a "Reason" why they gained the weight in the first place, to explore a deeper meaning to it all in addition. Surgery is a powerful tool, but it can only help so much if a person has impulsive issues and uses food as a drug.
