  1. They give you heparin (an anticoagulant) which reduces risk of DVT & PE and they also put stockings on you which also reduce the risk. This is something you should ask them about though... these medical questions should not be answered by people who are not medical professionals. I am a pharmacist who works in anticoagulation management, but I would still suggest you discuss any medical concerns with the physicians.

  2. Hi Dwayne,

My husband and I are from Edmonton and we both had the Plication procedure done Nov 17 at OCC. I had a few days of nausea and alot of bloating, but Kevin tolerated the procedure very well. We feel great! More energy, less fatigue.

7 weeks post-op: Kevin has lost 45 lbs (344 at start) and I have lost 33 (256 at start). We are eating regular foods now. It amazes us how little we eat and are full. We eat alot slower, chew food thoroughly and are exercising regularly (not running marathons or anything, but swimming or elliptical approx 3-4 days a week).

Our best advice is to follow the instructions and you should do very well.

About the "sugery in Mexico" experience: We too had reservations about travel to Tijuana, the facility, etc. but were very pleasantly surprised. The care we received was excellent and I would recommend OCC to anyone considering bariatric surgery.

I am a pharmacist (have worked with nurses who provide bariatric care) and I feel 100% satisfied with our decision. This procedure appears to be an excellent way to lose excess weight, allowing us to eat less and still feel satisfied, along with seeing rapid results which keep us motivated. I have reviewed the studies that are available: limited research and small numbers of patients but results appear promising.

We had also initially decided on the lap band, but weren't keen on needing fills, and possiblity of slippage or just the idea of a device being placed. After talking to Dr Ortiz and reading on my own, we decided to have the plication procedure instead. No regrets!

    Hope this helps.

    Tara and Kevin

  3. Hubby and I had Plication on Nov 17. He recovered very well even after the first day.. I had alot of nausea, stomach cramps and gas for at least 4 days. It got better slowly over the next week. Now we are 18 days post-op and feeling great! 3 more days until we can resume exercising. Don't overdo it soon after surgery (ie: heavy lifting... WALKING only! Do as much walking as you can though to reduce nausea and gas. And remember to drink lots of clear liquids! I felt worse when dehydrated. 4 more days until soft diet! WOOHOO! Cream soups do get old... but we are both determined to make this work so are following Dr Miranda's very closely. Good Luck! Keep in touch if you have any other questions!

  4. Congratulations to both of you. I had it done on 10/21 and wonder now why I didn't do it years ago. SO SIMPLE...NOT REALLY ANY PAIN (besides those crazy gas pains)...no hunger....fine on energy and sleep. It's been 3.5 weeks since mine and I feel great, just crossed over into the 'mushie' food phase...have lost 20 pounds. WOO HOO. You should be getting soooooooooo excited. Your world is about to change.

Thanks denali. Kevin is getting a bit nervous that he won't have lost enough weight and will have to delay surgery. I'm sure he'll be fine though. 2 more days!!!!
