Madge
I'm five days post op, I had some soup for my dinner (first thing I've eaten today) and I now feel super full. I'm worried something has gone wrong, I'm burping and I feel as if some soup/drink is coming up (sorry) it's not coming up, but I can feel it bubbling. Does this sound normal or have I managed to screw it up? Sorry for the manic post, I feel really paranoid. Madge.
MargieK
I would say this is what restriction feels like, but if you are really worried you can always call the OCC. They are really good at answering questions. I can always tell when my pouch has emptied out because I get a big burp. I used to get a lot of burps right after I ate, but that doesn't happen as much now (5 months after good restriction). I always think of the band like a stopped up sink (can't remember where I read that). Once the water goes down you'll hear some gurgles from the air that was trapped underneat the water. It's really weird getting used to what the band feels like. I get a tightness in my chest when I've eaten too much food at once. You'll also have a learning process as you find out how your band is. I didn't feel restriction until after my 2nd fill, but you might be one of the lucky ones with immediate restriction. Margie

First point I'd like to clarify is when you say "soup" are you referring to broth? At 5 days post op, you should not be having soups yet. Only clears and possibly a drinkable yogurt. Now that that question has been posed, I will give you a few suggestions. You are early out from your surgery. You have swelling and the backed up feeling or full sensation you are talking about is due to drinking to fast. Sip, sip, sip. I would recommend that you slow down. It sounds to me like you are filling your pouch/stoma and it is backing up into your throat. You do not want to do that to your esophogus. The espphogus is a tube of passage, it is not meant to be stretched. It is not made of the same elastic tissue your stoma or stomach is made from. That tissue is made to expand and contract, your esophogus is not. So, to regroup, slow down your drinking. Sip, sip, sip! This is the time to pay close attention to your body and begin learning the signs of your "new & improved system." When you feel full, stop drinking....even if you are not finished. Count it as a blessing, your portions are smaller. The more your healing takes place the more the swelling will go down. It is important to not put undue pressure on the band. It needs to heal and scar into place. (it is stitched into place, but those stitches are meant to hold the band so it can scar into place.) Take it easy, baby steps. You sound like you are doing great! Congrats on being new bandster! Welcome!
Madge
Yes I did mean broth. Feeling okay now, just have a little back ache and I feel a little hungry today (first day of feeling hungry) Could the back pain still be gas pains? I didn't have any gas pains after the surgery as I walked so much. I'm just a little paranoid as I had a band removed last year due to a slip and I really really don't want the same thing happening again. Thanks, Madge
AngieB
Hey Madge - sorry to hear about your band slip. Do you know what caused your slip? At any rate, glad the OCC gave you a second one! Congrats! Was this last year hard for you to maintain? Back pain could very well be gas pains. I'd say walk as much as you can. Thanks for posting and enjoy the day! Angie, The band slipped when I had a stomach flu. I didn't maintain at all, nearly put it all back on again! That's why I needed another one! I've been in touch with Dr. O and there doesn't seem to be any reason for a slip (I think I'm just super paranoid). I'm just plodding on with the liquids and taking things easy. I feel a lot better this evening after being able to have a protein drink. It's pretty tough just broth and liquids, I have been exhausted. I think the back pain is stress, my neck is sore as well. I always get neck and back pains when I'm stressed. Madge

Madge I can see why you would be hypersensitive to thinking band slip. Glad you talked to Dr. O! Hope the back pain goes away.....I completely agree.....protein drinks were so awesome. I couldn't believe how yummy drinkable yogurt was!!!!! Life saver!

Madge You just scared the crap out of me. I've been banded for about 3 mos. now and I'm on my SECOND round of the stomach flu. Lucky for me I haven't thrown up either time (the 1st was 10 days post-op). When I started feeling nauseated this time, I started to worry about my band because my mom was telling me how violently she was throwing up a couple of days ago and is still sore from it. I guess you really can't do anything to prevent it from happening.

I have the RX at home on hand for a just in case situation. There is also over the counter things you can purchase as well. I had 2 rounds of the flu and it was not fun. Vomiting with the band hurts....

I'm not a puker - usually it's 5-7 years between episodes but I don't want to take any chances!
