Guest marys
Hi everyone - I decided to take the bus (#992) from the airport and the Trolley (blue line so San Ysirdo) and it was an absolute breeze. The cost was $2.50 exact change from the airport for the bus. And it was .25cents more for the trolley but I couldn't figure out how to add that so i didn't and they don't check on the trolley. Although I did hear a trolley person can come around and ask to see your pass but I fugured they wouldn't throw me off. So you hop on the bus at the city bus station right outside the airport - if you are confused they have transportation folks in blue vests all over the place. The bus comes about every 6 minutes so the wait isn't long. You need exact change and ask for a transfer and you get off at Broadway and Kettner which is the AMERICAN FLYER STATION (PIECE of cake). Bus driver will help if you ask. Get off at american flyer and wait for the blue line (do not go by color of train they all seem red) and stand on the side of the track that says blue line - anyway, get on and go to the end of the line to san ysirdo (not sure of spelling cuz I don't have directions in front of me) It is about a 30 minute comfortable air conditioned ride and it stops at the end and you can tell its the border etc. again PIECE OF CAKE. get off and walk across the border. Yellow taxi sign (HUGE) is staring you in the face and you will be approached by many taxi drivers - have the address of the hotel or clinic clearly written down and ask - Cuanto dinero (how much) - they will say cinco or five dollars - wave it in their face, repeat it and say si (YES). simple simple. added by Lori: I was told if you walk across the border towards the McDonalds (about 1/2 block) then look for the orange & white cabs, they are generally the best - these are the cabs we will also call for you from the clinic when you are ready to return i loved it and it saved me about 120 from the office transportation which is great and convenient but expensive. Allow 1.5 hours . Also I walked across the border coming back and it took .20 minutes - much faster than driving across. mary

Littleroo27
Oh my gosh, thank you so much!!! I'm going down for my consult on Sept 4 and was fretting the border crossing part (I failed Spanish miserably in college!!!) As for the trolley, yes, they are all red This is the MTS (metro transit system) color, I think. But all of the trolleys have that big sign on the front and side of the first car that says what color line it is and where it is going. If you are coming from some place other then the airport and want to see what bus to take to the trolley, or where the closest trolley stop is, go to www.sdcommute.com and click on "trip planner." Guest marys
thanks for the link cuz i was thinking next time i go to san diego i would try to do the bus/trolley to get to different parts of town - it is so convenient and inexpensive. Good luck when you go to your consult - remember to write your questions down so you won't forget. A few reminders about the transportation (you probably know living in the area though)... Exact change for bus is $2.25 (i think i put 2.50 in my earlier message) Ask for a transfer if you are starting on the bus (you'll need it for the trolley) Seriously, don't worry - bring a book and try to relax/enjoy. Again leave at least 1.5-2.0 hours and you'll be more than fine/covered. Mary Oh my gosh, thank you so much!!! Lovely thing, the trolley!

I got on and bought my $2.25 bus ticket and asked for the transfer and then had to shell out the $5.50. If I had known, you could just buy the transfer and it is good all day for the bus and trolly. If I had known, you could just buy the transfer and it is good all day for the bus and trolly.Valerie Last time I was there, you could buy an all day bus/trolley pass fpr $5 and a 2 day pass for $9. Good for both the bus and trolley. Note: I don't think the bus driver can issue all day passes? When I did it and asked for the all day pass, the driver told me not to pay at that time and to just sit down, ride the bus to the transportation center and buy the pass there. But,, you got to ask and tell the bus driver you want the all day pass. For those bandsters that are doing the trip all in one day, this is by far the cheapest way to go. Note: Added on 8/18/2010, You can get a all day pass from the bus driver. Edited August 18, 2010 by Dolittle updated info

mom12
This was great information and sounds like the way to go. I am sure OCC would still reserve a room even if we don't use their transportation, I'll have to ask.

Dolittle
The above hyerlinks give you very good instructions on how to take the bus/trolley to the border and cross the foot bridges. Dan did a damn good job on this presentation,, Thanks Dan I haven't done the crossing by foot for a long time. To my understanding, things change and the USA is rebuilding the whole bordering crossing. So these instructions may not be accuate any longer. In January of 2013, I will be doing the crossing by foot and will up date this topic. If anyone between now and January does this by foot, please send me or post the changes. bbcaroline
Me either but I heard that it's almost the same you still take the same exit if you are walking, I think but maybe ask someone that has gone to TJ lately. Good Luck
Dolittle
Things have changed at the border and they're not done with the construction. You still take the #992 bus at the airport to the tolley station, then take the Blue line trolley to the border. This is where it has all changed. The old way doesn't exist anymore. When you get off the tolley, follow the flow of people. You now go around the back side of the US customs building. Come out and go across one foot bridge and your at the Taxi stand. EnchantedPiano70
Hi everyone, I am planning to go to the OCC-TJ for a refill and I need to know if there are any updates regarding transportation from San Diego Airport. Also, if I choose to pay the OCC for transportation, will they be willing to pick me up at the hotel I'll be staying at, near the border? Thank you Ruth
Susie16
Hi EnchantedPiano70, I was also wondering. I used to go once a year to Dr. So be checked, but I haven't done so for a few years. However, I need to make the trip. I live in the San Diego area and can easily travel by public transportation, or I could park right before the border and walk over. I'm just a bit concerned after I get to the other side. I went a few years ago, and it was a bit uncomfortable. Are the blue and white cabs still better than the yellow cabs? Also, if anyone is going over and wants to buddy-up, let me know.
