  1. I was able to start on real solid food and it really seems to be helping my energy levels and my gut issues! I think my body just needed something to "work" with! lol I spoke with another sleeve revision patient yesterday, and she said she had some of the very same issues I was having... you know, making sure there was always a bathroom in sight! So far, as of noon yesterday, I'm doing better. We'll see if that holds up since I had a few bites of pizza tonight. Mostly just the toppings, but I did have part of a very small piece, it tasted really good, and was really nice to eat with my family... but I can't eat much of it, which is good, as pizza has to be near the top of the list (ok maybe THE top) of my favorite food... Still amazed how little I am eating and how satisified I feel! Now... Pizza I realize is not a good weight loss food, I do get that, and I know I didn't get nearly enough protein out of that meal, but again, we were all sitting together, watching a movie, and it was nice, after several weeks on liquids, to just have a few bites of whatever they were eating. So far, no reflux, which was my biggest concern! I hope everyone has a wonderful Mother's Day tomorrow!!
  2. I have a favorite salad, its chicken, walnuts, apples, cranberries, and light mayo. So tonight, I took some of the roasted chicken breast, some fat free mayo, walnuts, and cranberries (i'm out of apples) put it in the food processor and made a mushy, yummy, pulverized salad meal. Tastes really good! What mushy foods are getting you through the sleeve post op diet? I'd love some suggestions.
  3. You are doing GREAT I'm so proud of you! You are doing better then I am on my liquids and protein intake. Because I'm a revision, I still have quite a bit of inflammation and swelling, so the drinking of anything but clear liquids is still a bit of a chore, but I do love the mashed potatoes! I know I'm not getting anywhere near my needed protein intake yet, but I'm working on it! Keep us posted !!!

    Tired

We are here for you Paula, for questions, support, of even if you just need to vent a little!
  5. There is a Contemporary Christian Song by Stacie Orrico called "Don't Look at Me". So, that is totally ME!. Here are the lyrics: Don't look at me if you're looking for perfection Don't look at me I will only let you down I'll do my best to point you in the right directon But don't look at me No, no, no Don't look at me, look at Him So last night, I was really craving something sweet, I wasn't hungry mind you - but with overweight people, being hungry isn't always the reason we eat. So anyway... I got one of those little mini hershey chocolate bars (did I make it sound small? I'm trying to make this wee little miniature chocolate sound super small)! Anyway, I wanted it, I melted it in my mouth and made it last and linger and oh my... it was delicious! I tell you this not because i'm encouraging anybody to cheat on their pre-op or post-op diet, but because even when we need a little somethin' somethin'... its OK. We don't have to fall off and dive head first into a chocolate fountain (oh my... I just totally pictured myself doing this!) We can have a wee little tiny minature treat, and move on.... stay within our healthy diets and still have a chocolate moment. Am I following my post op diet very closely... YES! I am very proud of myself. Did I have a little treat yesterday, YES!!! I did! Do I regret it? NOPE... I had a treat, in extreme moderation (really... it was so tiny you could hardly see it)! and I got up today and had my oatmeal, and I'm drinking my Sobe Life Water, and I'm still not hungry! Remember... follow the pre and post op diets as outlined by Dr. Miranda, but don't kick yourself if you stumble a little.... when it comes to perfection... there is only one! And HE has blessed my life in so many ways, and I know he's not going to hold my little wee miniscule chocolate fix against me If you have any questions... you know how to reach me!

    Tired

Paula - you are a week behind me, and I hit that wall last week! The fact is, you had surgery, and your body is recoverying. You also need to make sure you are taking in plenty of liquids. I was doing that, but I still hit a major wall! Dr. Miranda let me start mushy food a few days early and it has really helped... not sure if it was psychological or if it just helped, or if I am finally passed that too tired to get anything done phase... but by next week, you'll be feeling better, I promise! I'll keep praying for you and your mom, I know this has to be tough on both of you (hubby, too!)
  7. I spoke with Dr. Martinez, and he said, especially for sleeve revision patients, it may take 6 weeks for the post operative inflammation and swelling to really subside. That can happen a bit faster in a "virgin" sleeve surgery. So I'm trying to be a patient patient... trying to find some alternative ways to get in my protein, as the shakes do not seem to agree with me, no matter what type I use. I have noticed warm tea does go down much more easily then the cold tea, but even the iced tea hasn't created spasms, just have to drink it more slowly. Anxious to see what the next few weeks bring. The chicken and veggies sound sooooo good to me right now. I get to start on mushies on Monday, so... mashed potatoes... here i come!
  8. I say this to my patients all the time, don't weigh yourself everyday and don't get frustrated when you don't see the scale moving. This past week, I dropped a couple of pounds, but with the extremely limited intake I've had, well honestly I don't know what i was expecting! I started this 2nd phase of my journey at 195 on the pre-op diet and now I'm at about 173, so considering I don't have a large amount of weight to lose, I guess things are going pretty well. What I'm really noticing is that i'm easily getting into clothes that I couldn't get into for quite awhile. In fact, though the scale only showed about 2 pounds this past week, my clothes showed quite a bigger loss. My old fav. size 10 jeans are fitting me better then they ever did... I believe they will soon become those big comfy jeans you wear when lounging around the house! I'm thinking that this weekend will be when i start pulling those clothes out of the back of the closet - you all know what i'm talking about. The ones we bought when we were on our "way down" the first time - that we bought slightly small because we just knew we'd get into them, or ones that we fit into for a short period of time, and held onto - waiting for that day we would be into them again. All of my incision are healing really really well the only one I'm still babying a bit was where the drain was. I'm putting neosporin on it every day and keeping it covered just to make sure it heals well. I'm having a little trouble getting in enough protein right now, and I think its showing up in my energy level (or lack thereof) that could also have something to do with my lack of sleep... I've always been an insomniac, and its just been worse this past week or so... really hope I can settle in to a better routine this next week. Too much on my mind right now - hubby's lack of employment, fighting with disability and insurance on his knee.. and the list goes on, as it does for all women! Trying to take some time to put myself first at least a little bit each day and take some "me" time (not always easy with a full time job, 3 kids, 2 dogs, and a husband). Really anxious to start the mushy food stage on Monday! those mashed potatoes are calling my name! How is everyone else doing on their journey? I'd love to hear from you!

    Soy Protein

I tried my protein shots -but they gave me incredible heartburn, so i'm just trying to get down as much fo the protein shake as I can, but I only do it in the evening as I MUST be close to a bathroom!! Even with the Soy Protein. I'm not sure why i'm having so much trouble with a Soy based shake which has no lactose in it. Not sure what to try next. I'm thinking next week, when i'm in my "mushy stage" I may just go back to the protein bar, but melt it as I eat it - the protein bars NEVER gave me trouble like these shakes have been! Dr. Martinez said as a revision patient, it may be 6 weeks before we really loosen up some on the over restriction because of all the inflammation... I did cheat today, not because I was planning on it... I was making home made mac and cheese for my son's swim team pasta feed, and i was checking "doneness" of the pasta and before i knew it - i had popped it in my mouth, chewed it and swallowed it before I realized what I was doing. Thankfully it was cooked well, and I had chewed it well (almost 6 years of living with a band!) and had no issues... except that I wanted MORE of it LOL I'm really ready to eat some food... I know it won't be much, but I'm anxious! Mash potatoes on Monday. If you haven't seen this brand - they used to sell at Costco, but now I have to buy from Amazon - its all natural and only has 3 ingredients - potatoes, salt, and butter. You can make it low fat by using water instead of milk to make them. http://www.amazon.com/Honest-Natural-Potatoes-8-Serving-Pouches/dp/B00488N8KY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1336100007&sr=8-6 We always keep these around, the kiddo's love making them. I may have to look into the ProStat, or just hope as I get further from surgery, the heart burn decreases with the protein shots I already have.
  10. thanks Paula - I'm enjoying following your journey as well, our surgeries dates were so close, it will be nice to take this journey together!
  11. Dave - my husband makes his lower fat blue cheese with fat free sour cream and then just adds what he wants to it - you could probably do the same with the roasted garlic - start with the fat free sour cream (or reduced fat) and add what you want - including a little milk or evaporated skim milk (thicker) to thin it out a bit?
  12. By the way - the plication number is more like 500 performed at OCC! We keep quoting a number until we are officially updated, so if you called within 30 days, you would get the same # performed! Its probably more then the 500 now, but I haven't gotten my update yet
  13. Lmom - the other thread was deleted because it was full of false accusations and was actually legally shut down, as were the other sites she had posted on, she was a scammer from another patient board, scaring other patients with her misinformation. When we were able to track her down, she pulled all the rest of her posts on all the other sites. We are able to track IP addresses for posters, so even though people change their names, we know who they are..... OCC has a different technique for doing the plication that prevents those complications you are talking about, in fact, Dr. Ortiz was a lead speaker at the IFSO (International Federation Surgery for Obesity) last week in Barcelona Spain - presenting in front of the leaders in Bariatric Surgeryfrom around the world on the plication and sleeve techniques that he has pioneered! He was the ONLY surgeon invited to speak/present from Mexico. If you want more information on how Dr. Ortiz does the Plication or Sleeve surgery differently - give us a call, speak to Dr. Ortiz directly. You are correct, there are potential complications from any surgery! Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Martinez work hard to look for new and better ways to perform ANY surgery. Plication results have never been better, same with Sleeve results. They don't rest just because something is good enough, they are always working to improve techniques for better outcomes and safer surgeries! And more then anything else, get your facts straight!
  14. Hello OCC Sleeve patients. I have a question. I'm 2 weeks out from my sleeve revision surgery and wondering - how long did it take before you could get the thicker liquids like protein shakes or liquid yogurts down a bit easier? I'm 2 weeks out today and still really having to baby those, it takes me quite awhile to get through one. I know this is normal, just wondering what your experience was. Thanks! If you haven't read my blog - you can find it here. I encourage all of you to start one, it can be very helpful to other patients! http://www.occforum.com/index.php?app=blog
  15. Hi Dottie, if your band is out, we probably won't need the endoscopy - but if your band is still in, its likely you'll have at least the barium swallow, and possibly the endoscopy as well, they need to check for any signs of band erosion before they do the surgery so they know what they are getting in to. The endoscopy will be performed after you are already under anesthesia - the barium swallow will be done as part of your pre-op testing. If nothing shows up on the barium swallow, its possible you won't need the endoscopy, but you should plan for it.
  16. Hey Carol - they are New Whey Protein shots - they are thinner like juice so easier to get down then the thicker protein shakes... I bought the Acai, I kind of wish I had purchased the variety pack so I could try different flavors - GNC may have them - I ordered mine on Amazon. They have 42 grams of protein per 3.3 ounce shot. Last week they just seemed too "sweet" and I couldn't get through them - going to try again this week - maybe putting them in tea or something to get through them better.... I can't just drink them right now. I still have a bit of my Panera soup - its thicker so you can't each much at a time, but its ohhh so good! And I tried making my own Miso from a mix - its nothing like the good stuff from a Japenese restaurant!! Just strain it.

  18. I've been thinking more and more about Dr. Ortiz and the way he calls the revision surgery a "rescue surgery". At first I didn't really get it. The more I think about it, and hear from people in need of a revision surgery, or those that have already had it, the term is perfect! I wasn't thinking of myself as a 'rescue' - but honestly, given more time, I surely would have been. My weight was creeping back on, if I had waited, I would have been feeling desperate, and probably a bit like a failure, and the rescue would have been much more serious! I would have been even farther from my goal weight, and my health would have been suffering. I'm so glad to have a surgeon like Dr. Ortiz that is sympathetic to this need... to be rescued! There is no shame in it, all we need to do is ask for help! For those of you out there, that have had a surgery and you aren't doing as well as expected, or you did well, and then something changed, remember there really his hope for a rescue! Think of rich and famous people, like Carnie Wilson, that could afford trainers, meal planners, anything she wanted, and yet she still needed her rescue! Look at someone like Star Jones, she is headed back up the scales, everytime I see her on air, she seems to have gained a few pounds. Maybe the fact that Carnie has made it so public, admitted to her struggles, reached out for help, will make it easier for all of us to seek that help when we need it. Whether its a failed gastric band surgery, a failed bypass surgery, or even a failed sleeve or plication surgery, there is still hope, you do have options! Don't hide because you are embarassed, and if you are one of the OCC patients that has been ignoring your follow-up program and not answering us back - DO IT! We aren't trying to embarrass you, don't be ashamed if you need help, we can't help you if you don't ask! I'm so thankful to Dr. Ortiz and OCC for rescuing me, even when I didn't think that's what I really needed
  19. Hey Paula, you know how to reach me if you have any questions! I'm so anxious to see what the PRP does for me. I've been reading a lot about what it has done for people like Tiger Woods & Kobe Bryant with their orthopedic issues, because it can help heal tissue, create new blood vessels, help collagen production... its really amazing stuff and its all from your own body - they are studying even more because they think it can help your body create new stem cells! Amazing! Those sports stars had to fly to Germay to get their treatment, I feel so lucky I can go to a doctor I know and trust! Dr. So is also great with the Botox! I haven't done any of the fillers yet, if the PRP works like I hope it does, I may not need that

    ALMOST THERE

Carol I am sooooo excited for you! You are doing such a great job on the pre-op diet. Keep us all posted on your journey
  21. OH MY GOSH... I just have to say - Panera - Cheddar Broccoli soup - blended... took me to my yummy place tonight! I know its not low fat - but I ate maybe a 1/4 cup. me so happy
  22. Thanks Paula I saw your entry on Facebook today, so glad you are doing well!
  23. Still recovering from surgery of course, but feeling better every day and increasing my physical activity, while following the post-op guidelines. I'm doing well getting down my liquids. I do best with hot tea or soup (Miso is my favorite!) but the colder liquids are getting easier. I did give myself a treat and had a no sugar added fudgesicle... what a delight! I still seem to have some issues with the protein shakes. Not sure what it is since I've eliminated lactose by using the soy protein powder and they aren't high in sugar, but they send me running to the restroom. Of course this happened after my original band surgery, too, so I'm not too worried. Before surgery the Protein shots tasted fine, but post surgery, they just taste way too sweet, maybe its my taste buds changing already - not craving the sweets? I may try to dilute them down a bit since they are a great source of protein. I'll keep you posted. The recovery from the sleeve revision is going really well. I was able to sleep on my left side last night, so I slept much better. I'm a left side sleeper and since that is where the drain was, I was a little sore on that side, but that is really lessening as the days go by. I would do the surgery again in a heartbeat. If you've been following my blog, you know I had some nervous moments leading up to surgery, I even begged Dr. Ortiz to let me be one of the early surgeries, even though revisions typically go last. I guess it helps to have friends in high places But the surgery was easy and I felt really great even right after, had a few "crampy" moments with the drain, but once that was out, its been smooth sailing! I'm anxious to get through this liquid phase and take my new "shrimp stomach" for a ride and see how it feels to eat again. If anyone has questions about a revision surgery, either from band to sleeve or from bypass to band please email me at lori@obesitycontrolcenter.com or call 1-866-376-7849 ext. 81
  24. Oh... and I'm loving the Viactiv Calcium Chews, its like a little treat. Costco even has a Kirkland brand - sugar free ones (i'm eating the Viactiv brand carmel flavor... the chocolate ones are good, too)
