Putting the Scale Away

Recommended Posts

((((((((((((((((((((Hugs Everyone))))))))))))))))))

I can be addicted to the scale so I'm going to put it away and stop weighing at home. There was a benchmark I wanted to hit which was 237 (my lowest weight in about 6 months) so now that I saw that number today I can just stop thinking about it.

I had a very successful weight loss effort that ended almost a year ago when I hit 212, then it went up up up. If I don't put away my scale now I'll weight myself every hour on the hour until I get back to 212 and I don't want to spend my time doing that right now.

In fact I'm seriously thinking about only weighing when I get the fills (do they weigh us then) or even telling the staff to "not" tell me my weight until it's under 200 lbs.

We'll see how it goes.

If your able to just put the scale away and forget it, then your better than I am. I have tried doing that and the most I can do is about 3 days. I can't stand it. I know it would be better for me if I did it only maybe once a week, but I can't. As far as the fills go, at the OCC, they haven't put me on the scale since my surgery day so.............. your going to have to come up with something different. Glad your surgery went well though. Take Care.

I did exactly the same thing, especially in that first month after surgery when I was on an all liquid diet. I felt like the pounds were coming off daily so I weighed myself several times a day. however when I started eating solids, the weight wasn't coming off as quickly. I continued to weigh myself daily and when the scale wouldn't move, I'd become very discouraged and frustrated and threw in the towel a couple of times and said.."what's the point?" and reverted back to some of my old habits. eating because I was frustrated...eating because I felt like I'd failed...NOT A GOOD IDEA. I ended up gaining that month. so your'e right, the scale can become our nemesis.

I've come to the realization that I shouldn't look at this as a temporary thing. I just need to continue eating healthy and watching my portions (which is what we're supposed to do anyway) and the weight will come off....eventually. I don't have to give myself a deadline or a magic number. I think when we do that we set ourselves up for failure because somehow we'll convince ourselves that once we reach that magic NUMBER, then we've achieved our goal and that's it. time to go off the diet. Trust me this is tough for me as well.

I put my scale in a drawer and will check my weight every 4-5 days now.

Thank you for your post. It's good to know that weight tracking is up to me so and me alone. That way I can put away the scale and just be oblivious to the number provided I log every bite, lick and taste.

I try and weigh myself just once a week. Every day I get obsessed (really possessed is a better word!) I am really trying to make this about eating right (and not so much!) and keeping the weight off. If you are like me you are a professional dieter, name a diet been there..... (still can't eat papayas :bad: from the "Hollywood diet")

Try the same day every week and see what happens.... like weight watchers. I know with the bodybugg system they do the same, only once a week.

I had to stop obsessing over the scale due to being the same weight all through Feb/March. Then I got my 3rd fill, down 10 lbs, and now the scale hasn't budged again. HOWEVER, I am in a size 14 from size 18 in Feb/March. I'll take the NSV (no scale victory) any day!

You all are so honest about the scale thing. I had to throw mine away. If I lost I had a great day feeling confident. If I gained I felt terrible and my whole day I was thinking about it and had the vicious cycle thinking. Self defeated might as well eat the stuff I shouldn't. The really bad part is tho. When I threw it away and then 2 months later joined Curves and got weighed I had gained weight! So guess I thought if I didn't see the numbers I'd magically lose. Not the case. Pick myself up, dust myself off, put on my tennies and get exercising.

I'm trying not to weigh myself at Curves but its hard to break the habit.

Robbyn,

Honestly I have such mixed emotions about the scales, Truly a Love, Hate Relationship! I too still think about taking them out of the house, but I just cant seem to do it. They frustrate me SO much at times, but other times I think they are keeping me on track. I do try to go at least a full week. I am so close to 199, so it is going to be hard to put them away. You will do great what ever decision you make!

WOW - I could never do that!

I weigh myself twice a day, in the morning & when I go to bed,

I do the same thing. If the numbers seem too high at night, I do a very light supper. Weighing twice a day works for me. It helps me pinpoint what foods are causing water weight gain. Everyone is different, you have to do what is right for you. I tried weighing once a week and I was always discouraged if I didn't lose what I thought I should have. I know weight fluctuates a bit daily, so I take that into consideration.

Even though I am almost at my goal, I need the daily accountability to keep my eating habits in check. If I don't weigh every day, I could make bad choices for several days in a row and before I know it, I'd be up 5 lb. And as we all know, 5 lb. is very easy to put on - but can take MONTHS to get off (I've been trying to drop my last 6 lb. for almost 2 months and the scale hasn't budged!).

If you are that strong, I envy you. Just keep in mind that it can sneak back up on you without much warning.

I need my scale to keep me accountable. I weigh once a day in the morning and it has kept me honest and on the right road. I personally think that most people who don't weigh VERY regularly have a hard time keeping the weight off...

Thank you for your comments. All food for thought. OA does a once a month weigh in and I am still a member of ww so that is a once a week weigh.

I'm going to weigh after the pre op and then at weight watchers while I wait for my first fill, but I'm not going to weigh at home, I'll weigh at weight watchers on their scale.

Happy Friday!

OK, I didnt read any of the replies at all as I want to say this without any interruptions (smile).

The scale does help with your own personal goal, to be accountable to yourself and to be honest. After all, we are not fooling anyone but yourself. Weigh yourself at the same time each time you weigh, as you weight less in the morning than any other part of the day. Evenings, I weight a good 2 lbs more due to the things I've done during the day and especially exercising, as muscles gains weight when using them. At first, I couldsn't help it and weighed every morning for about 3 week...then I weighed once a week (after hubby took it away from me and put it in the trunk of the car!), then monthly. Now I am back to once a month, as I've lost a bit and want to continue to be accountable. I only want to lose 1 - 2 lbs a week, as I don't want all the flabby skin too soon, even though I am exercising. My eating habits and exercise program has changed dramatically, so weighing once a week, helps me track my daily nutriction and fitness level.

There are other ways to track your weight loss too, which is how you look, how your clothes are fitting, how people are commenting to you, and what the measuring tape is saying! YEAH! How awesome is that? THESE are the good kind of tracking as well as weighing. So don't stick with the scale only...the others keep you positive and wanting to go forward!

Keep the faith! Jazzy!!

I was a daily morning weigher--now I usually weigh once a week. I am happy to report that I haven't weighed in 10 days and this morning I got on and weighed 204.6!! I'm so close to being under 200 I can taste it! Good Luck!!
