BusMomma
Today I started my liquid diet. I have to do this for ten days. I am so hungry...my stomach keeps growling! How do I make it through these ten days without losing my mind? I am so excited to have this surgery. I hope to get off of my blood pressure medicine; I hope that my asthma clears up; and I hope that my sugar goes down. I am not on any meds for the sugar, as my doctor believes it will go down after my surgery. I have not been thin for so long...I don't know what to expect when I lose weight. I am 240 pounds and hope to get down to 160...or possibly even 150. These goals are realistic, aren't they?? I'd appreciate hearing from people who have have lapband surgery... Which of the three pre op diets are you doing. the 2 shakes a day and one lean cuisine was the one I followed and found it tolerable. I did do a lot of switching around to find the "right" shake. Ended up with the Equate brand as my preference. Keep on plugging. Since surgery my blood pressure is low normal, something that has not been since adulthood (along time ago). BusMomma
My doctor has me on a strictly liquid diet. I'm not liking this at the present time. But I know I have to do it. Does this liquid diet get ANY easier after a few days??? I have SUCH a headache...
trulytangledgrl
Hi there! Congrats on your decision to get lapband surgery. You are not going to regret it! The liquid diet is really difficult, I know, but stick with it so that you can lose a little before your surgery. It really helps the Dr's when you can lose a little because it helps if you have a fatty liver. I guess it makes it easier for them to see around inside of there when you can get some of the weight off your liver. There might be days where its really difficult even having the band - - what I mean is that the band is NOT an "easy fix" as some people might try to tell you (mostly to discourage you because they are jealous). By no means is having the band easy.... It takes a lot of strength and courage and also you will be forced to deal with emotional issues head-on instead of stuffing them down your throat. You absolutely CAN get down to 160-150!! My heaviest weight was similar to yours - about 235 or so, and I was at 195 when I had surgery, and at one point was down to 145. So its absolutely doable. Just have faith in yourself! If you need extra support feel free to send a message.
BusMomma
I have lost 12.5 pounds since the liquid diet started. I can tell you exactly how this was done...by being in the bathroom. I talked to the dietician yesterday. She told me to still have a protein shake for breakfast and lunch, but to have a protein and vegetables for dinner with NO carbs. Chicken and broccoli/cauliflower never tasted so good! But...I'm still running to the bathroom. Even water sends me running. What can I do??? The dietician does not understand what is making me do this. Now my new fear is that I will continue to be sick after this surgery. It does get better, doesn't it??? I came home from work this morning and just slept on the couch as I don't know what else to do. I can hear my stomach rumbling and I have to go back to work at 2:00. There are no bathrooms as I do my job. This is awful...I found myself crying before because I am so frustrated. I've come this far...and am just one week away...but I am truly questioning this due to this stupid liquid diet.
Bella1980
Have you tried to switch the type/brand of potein shakes you are drinking? I would have to say it is because of diet change and your body it just reacting to it. It might take a while for you body to catch up to the way you are eating now. I would also say this your body processing the fat loss and it has to leave the body some way.

The fibre in veggies (broccoli, esp) can often though a person who isn't used to it, to the bathroom often. Diarrhea. Pretty common. Shakes. Are you on a soy based protein powder? BusMomma
The shake I had this morning was Special K. It contains 18g of sugars. I do have another brand (Transitions) that has only 2g. I think I will not drink the Special K anymore. But I have the diarrhea even with drinking water.
BusMomma
Lindsay, The diarrhea is my biggest problem. I never dreamed this would happen like this. Do you think a soy based protein would change how I am feeling???
Lindsay
I thought maybe you had a soy allergy, which is quite common, but people don't realize it. I was wondering if you were using a soy based protein powder. That's once thing, protein powders are NOT all created equally. And sometimes, it's a matter of switching brands. I've always found fibrous greens give me the shits ... esp if you're not taking in much more than that! Your system should adapt/adjust with time - I know when I used to diet, it would be a few weeks before my digestive system slowed down a bit, and actually started absorbing the nutrients. As a side, a couple of years ago, I had a really sensitive system. I don't even know why. Have you tried taking an Imodium, and seeing if it clears up? Have you been away, vacationing anywhere lately? Parasites? Just throwing a bunch of variables out there!
BusMomma
I am on my way back to work, but wanted to post beforehand... Five days until my surgery!!! The protein shakes that I was doing (Transitions...purchased from my doctor's office) is what I believe was making me so sick. I talked to the dietician and she told me to substitute dinner in place of a protein shake. So I've been doing chicken or fish for dinner, plus fresh steamed green beans. I've changed brands of protein shakes as well. I'm happy to report that as of this moment, I'm not sick today! The other day I was praying for death...but now I KNOW I can do this. And with only five days to go, well, I'm pretty excited!
BusMomma
Lindsay, I will post more to your post later...but, yes, I have been taking Immodium (at least I did on Tuesday and Wednesday). I am a school bus driver...so those pills are the ONLY thing that got me through my routes!!! As I posted a minute ago, I did change the protein shake brand...this one is AWESOME...and it seems to do much better for me.
BusMomma
Well, apparently I spoke too soon. JUST made it home from work and it started again. Now I am clueless. I used a different shake and that didn't solve my problem. Is this normal??? Should I do anything different or add anything? I'm really tired of living with this. Please tell me this WILL stop after my surgery. I keep thinking that this will continue for the rest of my life.....

Once you are able to be on a diet where you are eating solids, it should subside. Also, I think that just as one other bandster said, eating a lot of greens can give you diarrhea also. So maybe cut down on the greens and eat carrots or something if you are able.
BusMomma
Well, Tuesday is my big day. Today and tomorrow are my clear liquid days. I've been trying to stay busy so I went on a cleaning spree all weekend. I've been feeling pretty good. I called the Weight Management department at my hospital last week. I think it was Thursday. They told me to stop the shakes. I did and wasn't sick anymore. I just want Tuesday to come so I can get this over with. I have to admit that I am NOT looking forward to starting those shakes again.
