How did you choose your goal weight?

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about changing my goal weight for a while now, right now I have my goal weight set at 130lbs but I'm not really sure why I set my goal so high (or my goal weight so low)...

I guess part of it was based on what the recommended weight is for my height, part of it was me wanting to set my goal similar to what I saw others setting their goals at and given my strong personality I wanted to challenge myself.

I mean when I was a cheerleader in high school and college I was a size 8 weighing 140-145 and of course like most girls I had some body image issues but I looked good was totally confident wearing a crop top and short skirt on the field. At that time I was eating whatever I wanted (like most teenagers I wasn't choosing the healthiest foods) but was getting so much of a workout from cheering I never really worried about it!

I honestly feel like if I got down to 170lbs and never lost another pound I would be fine... And at 150lbs I would be ecstatic so why would I set myself up for failure by setting my goal at 130? I can honestly say that never in my life can I recall weighing 130lbs I'm guessing it must have been middle school maybe..

I mean do we really even need a goal weight? Or will eventually our bodies just settle at a weight where it's comfortable?

Sorry for the idle rambling, I guess I am so used to failing on diets before and I know the band will help me not to fail this time but I don't want to be disappointed if I don't reach this lofty goal weight I have set for myself...

Michelle,, your doing great,,, I was never much into goals,, I just played it by ear and went day to day,, the next thing I knew I was at a weight I hadn't seen since grade school. From 295 to 205,, I know I have another 20lbs I'd like to loose,, but it will come off in a matter of time. Bicycle season is now starting in the midwest and that's where I did the best last summer as far as loosing the weight. Exercise really helps and with the band,, with proper restriction,, you'll lose weight.

I set my goal weight at 130, because 1) I felt it was actually attainable to lose 90 lbs and 2) it just sounded like a healthy, reasonable weight. I'm only 4'10, so I think the recommended weight is like 90-104 lbs, which is ridiculous and I don't think I'd ever want to be that skinny. I am Greek, I have hips and curves, and 130 just seems to fit me. :) I hope!

great topic, Michelle! :cheerleader:

Hmmmm... very interesting topic Michelle.

I based my goal weight on the average theory of 100 lbs at 5 feet and 5 lbs for every inch over 5 feet. For me at 5'5 that means 125. But your topic got me thinking... I haven't weighed 125 since Grade 2!!!! I remember clearly weighing that much when the teacher made all the kids get weighed and put our weights up on the wall at the beginning of the year. She intended to do it again at the end of the year and compare our heights and weights over the 10 months of school. I was the ONLY one in the class who was over 100 lbs. The lowest weight I ever remember beyond that time was 135 (which I only stayed at for about 2 weeks).

Even the last time I had my big weight loss I only made it down to 158. I think I'd still like to be less than that but maybe 125 is a bit light. I may need to rethink my goal to one that is more realistic.

I have a goal weight in mind...but not a set number. I remember when I weight 188- i was athletic- looked good- wore a size 14/16 and was happy but still trying to lose. I am 6 ft tall, and i would like to weigh between 160-175, wherever i feel good! I think that people set goals, so they have a big picture to look at..I like to know that i weigh x and i need to weigh y so i have z more to go... i wish it wasnt that way but it is. speaking of getting rid of the weight, i have a GREAT fill so i need to get back on the exercise wagon..UGH! hahah i wish i liked it as much as I used to!

Hi Mamamichelle,

This is a really good question !!!

I came up with my goal weight of 150 lbs like this ... I got married being a good 180 lbs. already feeling a bit uncomfortable, but still in the "happy/ok range", the best result I had dieting (in the past 10 years) was a proud 155lbs. and I felt soooooooo great, oh yeah and I remember me saying " I will never ever going to get as fat as I was...:" ROFL

I figured I set my goal at 150 for now thinking the "best feeling ever" -5lbs, but I am more than happy if it will be a little more. I guess most important thing is how you feel about yourself, right ?

Another aspect for me is ... being german, I still do measure in kg instead of lbs, so 155 lbs would be 70 kg and 150 lbs would be 68 kg and I just do not want to have that 7 ;-)

BTW: You are doing AWWWWWWSSOOOMMME :cheerleader:

Hat's up !!!!!! ><' ><'

I am a big fan of curves too! When I was playing around with the "My Virtual Model" site I did one at 145 and 130 and honestly I think the 145 looks better, like you said I don't know if I would want to be that skinny... lol

Here's what I mean (you can click the smaller pic to see the larger version):

I set my goal at 135 and I have no reason for that. I truly feel that I will look my best at about 145-150. Just have to feel it out as it goes. Just so happy the scale is finally moving in the right direction!!!!

I think that everyone's goals will happen when they get there. For example, last night i watched the grand finale of biggest loser. I think that Ali and Mark both look horrible in the face. They look drawn and not near so friendly. I love that Alli won and that she has lost soooooo much, but I honestly think a couple of extra lbs in her face would do wonders... mark well... get rid of the beard and maybe he would look better (this coming from someone married to a beard)

I set my goal based on where I was happy. I will reevaluate that when i get there and based on my family's thoughts, since I can't see any changes in myself.... (I have lost 30lbs and can't figure out where)

Hey Michelle, quick question for you. How do you add your photo next to your posts? I've tried so many times and my photo never shows up!

Argh! I'm pretty computer literate, so this is frustrating me that I can't figure it out!

Well, this is unusual, but when I was still starting my banding journey here is the states, I joined the local band group and was weighed on this cool scale by the bariatrician. This scale records your weight, your BMI, your fat%, your body water % and you bones and flesh %. Really cool scale. What it said for me was that my bones, water & flesh, with no fat whatsoever, weighed 147 pounds. But, the doctor said that since everyone needs a tiny bit of fat in them, my ideal weight would be 150 pounds.

What is unusual about this is that I am only 5'3". All the weight charts indicate that I should be around 120, so I found this odd. The doctor said it just goes to show you that those weight charts are wrong because everyone has different bone and flesh mass and my bones happen to weigh a lot more than most people of my height.

Isn't that weird? Did you ever hear of such a thing?

Hey Michelle!

So funny that you brought this up. I just got banded on the 10th of April and since last Wednesday have lost 10 lbs. I have mixed feelings with the whole "getting skinny" thing. When I was on my last weight loss kick after I had my 2 year old, I got down to 199. (currently 234) I am 5'10 and I had people that have known me my whole life telling me that my face was too thin. I have been overweight my whole life so for them to not see my face round, full and plastered with a uncomfortable smile all the time was weird for them. I am nervous to lose past the 200 mark because of people in my life telling me that I don't need to lose anymore weight and that I look good as I am. I am going to try to get to 175 or where I feel sexy!! I believe that the people (in my family and my friends) that don't want me to get any smaller then a size 14 (that is what size I was at 199) because they are all over weight. I am always the "funny and friendly" girl taking pictures of the "skinny and sexy" girlfriends and I feel like that is they way they like it.

I know I am jumping here and there but hopefully it makes sense. I also don't want to set myself up for failure telling myself that I want to be a size 2 and never getting there. Then feeling frustrated and down on myself all over again.

I honestly just want to feel sexy and comfortable in my own skin. I am also weighing in a BodPod that breaks things down with how much my bones and muscles weigh and then how much weight is fat. So I am going on that too.

Brook

PS I think that the biggest losers looked great last night and I am so proud of Ali for winning it! You go girl!!!

Dr. Miranda gave me a goal weight: 142. I'm only 5'4. That's what I'll hit by my b-day of this year. From there, I'll lose another 5-8 lbs...maybe. I am at 156 right now and in a size 8. My goal size is a size 6. I have figured out that I weigh a lot...so, if I can get to the size, but the numbers aren't there...that's ok too. According to the BMI calculator, at 150, my BMI is what they consider "normal". Where I'm at now is still considered "overweight". If at 142, I'm in my goal size...that'll be great. I'll just concentrate on tightening everything up!

Hey girls! I would like to say hi to Brook, I was with you on Thu and rode the van back with you to the airport area on Fri. I'm glad to see you online :lb14: . Michelle, great topic. I set my goal at 130 because i feel it is realistic and able to achieve. I weighed 115 up until my first pregnancy at which I went up to 177 and afterwards came down to 135. I am 5'1" and probably a medium frame, with four kids so 130 would be beyond exciting!

I too believe in curves, although I weighed 115 before, I was a small frame (before kids) and still had curves, you know nice top and buttocks- if i do say so myself..hahahahaha :D:lol: At the same time I worked out 2 hours daily, 5 days a week. That's why I didn't set my goal weight at 120 or lower because although the BMI and ideal charts say I should be 115-125, I decided on 130. I agree with some of the others as far as what is comfortable for you.

I have short term goals, and long term goals, but will not hold myself to them. They are mainly just points to stop and consider what I want to do next. My short term goal is to get under 200 lbs. My last one was to get under 250! I set my goal weight at 150 and will re-evaluate how I look and feel at that point and adjust it accordingly. I was 118 pounds in high school, but doubt that it is realistic to set that kind of goal.....I actually thought I was fat back then! I was wearing a size 9! I think either the clothing has gotten bigger over the years or sizes have changed. Don't forget that time and age has a lot to do with the shape of your body, so don't set impossible goals at the beginning.

Like you, MM, I was a cheerleader in high school. I had no idea how much I weighed - never stepped on the scale, but always felt fat. I was wearing a size 9, at almost 5'7 - I don't know what I was thinking! Since having my first child at 17, I was always weighing in at the Dr.'s office and got as high as 222. (Want to know a weird coincidence? All five pregnancies ended with me weighing exactly 222. Weird, eh?) Anyway, I've lost weight numerous times, and have worn a 9 again at several points, although I don't think my weight was ever below 165-170.

I have a goal though of getting below that and getting into a 7 - which may or may not be possible, we'll see. I have set a goal of 145, but it's not set in stone. I may change it at the point where I am comfortable with my size again. Right now, my mini-goal is getting to 175 - which is not the weight I want to be, but it's the point where I stop seeing a beached whale every time I look in the mirror. lol

My first goal was 135, but I am 5'6" (almost 5'7") so I changed it to 145-150. I don't want to be really, really skinny. I have a large frame and I think ideally the 130's would be too small. I just want to be healthy and look nice.

Thanks for all the responses, gave me a lot to think about...

I really was happy at 145-150 and I decided that for me I would rather focus on a set number of lbs lost and give myself a goal date to reach that # of lbs lost...

Soooooooo I have changed my goal to 147 which will put me at 100lbs lost and I have set my goal date to be 01/01/2009 losing 100lbs in 1 year will be tough but with my Band as my safety net and you guys as my support system I really think I can do it!!

Who knows once I reach my goal by the end of 2008 maybe I will try to get down to 130lbs by the end of 2009!

I originally set my goal at 150 but I am only 5'3 and when I plugged that in on a BMI calculator I was still considered overweight. So I plugged in 145....still overweight. So I plugged in 140 and that will put me with a BMI at 24.8. I know, I know it is just a number.....but my GOAL is to not be overweight. Why go through all of this to still be considered overweight, right? So my current goal is 140....time frame? not sure. I guess maybe next March or April. I would love to start trying to get pregnant sometime next summer so I am shooting to have my weight off by then.

Michelle,

You look great already and I am sure you can make your 100 lb. goal no problem. By the way wow you are almost at the under 200# mark and that is a great landmark too. I set my goal weight at 113 because I am 5'2" barely and have a very small frame. I have regularly lost to 130 between pregnancies etc. and that is a good weight for me if I have a lot of muscle with it. So I may adjust my weight if I am being diligent enough in working out. My biggest excitement with this whole process is not so much losing the weight but I have hope for maintaining. I have lost weight so many times and then just gained it back with the next pregnancy or whatever, usually plus some. The band is my tool to know that my effort will not be in vain.

Blessings!

DO YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE A WEIGHT GOAL? I HAVE KNOW IDEA WHAT I WOULD CHOOSE. WITHOUT THE LAPBAND I WOULD BE HAPPY AT 170, BUT WITH IT I THINK I COULD LOSE MORE. IN HIGH SCHOOL I WAS IN THE 130'S BUT I REALLY DO NOT KNOW HOW REALALISIC THAT IS NOW. I DID SPORTS FOR 2 HOURS A DAY AND MAINLY FOCUSED ON BOYS. I DID EAT WHAT EVER I WANT BUT THINKING BACK I MOST LIKELY DID NOT TAKE TIME TO EAT ALL THAT OFTEN. LUNCH WAS A BAG OF POPCORN AND A SODA. THAN BEFORE PRACTICE AFTER SCHOOL WE WOULD RUN TO BURGER KING OR SOME OTHER FAST FOOD. BUT THAT WOULD GO FOR A 2 HOUR GRUELING PRACTICE. I REALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I WANT MY GOAL WEIGHT TO BE. MY FIRST GOAL WOULD BE NOT TO HAVE TO SHOP IN THE PLUS SECTION OR A PLUS STORE. THERE CLOTHES ARE SO EXPENSIVE AND IT IS HARD TO FIND SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT MAKE ME LOOK LIKE A GRANDMA. SO MY QUESTION IS .....DO THE DOCTOR'S TELL YOU YOUR GOAL WEIGHT OR YOU. MOMONAMISSION

When I was at the OCC dr. ortiz asked me how much I wanted to lose.... My OB has told me a healthy weight range to shoot for-and Ive played with the numbers on a BMI calculator- that is how I picked mine. You dont have to have a goal weight, most people to do so that they have something to strive for. I have set one goal that I hope to reach in about a year...and for little goals on the way i have bought some clothes in different sizes soooo we will see when I can get into those! :o) Just do whatever motivates you and makes you happy!
