  1. I had my band done years ago, there .. and I too experienced a few 'off' things, but it wasn't anything that really turned me off.

I still remember they had told me to arrive VERY early at 6.30am for surgery the next morning .... but then the doctors didn't arrive until after 9!

The wait was terrible on my nerves! And I felt completely forgottena bout in the waiting room. Heck, the receiptionist hadn't even arrived at that time.

  2. Why was your experience just 'ok'? Do you mind sharing the details in this thread?

This is important info, as a lot of people read this info .. just don't post. :)

If anything, i'd question the PS they have; they've gone through A LOT of doctors over the past 3 years that I've been on this board. And i've NEVER seen any photos of before/afters nor any testimonials. They won't/haven't posted anything publically which is a huge red flag IMO.

I would never go there, because of that.

  3. I was wondering what my calorie intake should be during the post op diet? I know they say 60 grams of protein but also what should my fat and carb intake be? The reason I'm asking is I was worried I want getting enough calories so I ate a small cup of straine.d potato soup, which is kind of fattening

Potatoe soup would only be fatening if it's used with whole milk or cream.

It can very easily be made on the lighter side.

I would encourage you to only make your food. No store bought anything.

  4. I'm coming up to my 3 year bandiversary.

My surgery was on March 3, 2010, at the OCC in Tijuana.

It feels like so much longer, but it's been 3 years. And I'm a completely different person on the outside. My inside is still catching up.

I was very very fortunate to find a centre here in Toronto, who was accepting 'foreign' lapband patients, so I was able to get blind (no flouro) fills done there for a fee. My fills at he beginning were very very slow ... I didn't feel actual restriction, until my 3rd fill, which was about 8 months into the process. I was ready for some real change by this point! That's when my appetite reduced, and the weight started to fly off. I was also exercising very consistently, which really enhanced and pushed my weight and fat loss progress along.

    MY STATS//

    My starting weight was 231.

I am now very content at 140lbs. I can easily drop down to 136lbs if I cut back on my fluid intake. This can happen over night.

    I wear a size 'medium', or size 8. Jeans are a 28.

My boobs have gone down to an 34A cup, from a very full 40C ....

I walk at least 2 hours a day, 6 days a week (I own a dog walking business), and I'm at the gym lifting heavy stuff at least 3x's a week to help maintain my lean muscle mass, and keep my bodyfat low. My diet is mostly in check; high protein & high fat, very little carbs (including fruit, very little). I do drink a lot of chocolate milk. That's my main indulgence of my calories!

My calories very rarely go under 1200/day. If I go any lower, my energy really drops.

I can barely believe it's been 3 years.

Getting the lapband has been the very best decision I've ever made. And I don't regret it for a moment.

Thank you to the OCC for changing my life, in the best way possible.

  5. They did ask me specifically what I was doing ... and I told them I went over for 3 days for a medical procedure. They kinda giggled, and that was it.

I do believe they asked me the doctors' name & address, and they knew exactly who I was referencing.

I did take the OCC van/taxi, as I was going straight to the airport from the hotel/clinic --

    Pack LIGHT.

You won't need much, except really comfy jogging pants, thick socks/slippers, and maybe a couple tshirts .... I remember getting the sweats the night after my surgery, more because of my anxiety than the surgery, and wished I had packed a fresh tshirt to change into. :)

You surgery incisions are sooo tiny, you'll be shocked!

So don't worry too much about not being able to bend over, ect.

My discomfort was caused completly by gas post surgery ... they'll blow your tumy up with air, which is the worst of it all!

Walking/moving around helps release this extra gas. I also found I had bad acid reflex post surgery, which is something I had never experienced before, so I wasn't sure what was going on.

  6. I'm losing confidence in my surgery daily. I had sleeve surgery on January 31,12. When I left Mexico 5 days later I was 7 pounds heavier than I was when I arrived. Dr Ortiz's office assured me it was just water retention. It has been 9 days and I couldn't be more miserable. I never want to see a cup of of warm chicken water again. I have loss the water weight I retained after surgery and a whooping 2 pounds. Woo who. I thought I would have this huge loss up front to keep my spirits up. So far nada. I feel terrible and can't help wondering what in the world was I thinking. I would love to hear that somewhat else struggled like this right after their surgery but within a few weeks everything turned around and they couldn't be happier. Can someone say that please!!!!!

    It's only been 9 days!

You need to keep up with the post op diet ... If food choices are a big deal for you, you need to remember that you won't be eating the same way that you did before. This was all explained prior to the surgery, from Dr Miranda.

    You're exercising right?

I can go up and down 6lbs over night due to water retention, so stay OFF THE SCALE, and go with 5 or 6 point body measurements. The scale isn't always going to tell you what you need to know.

  7. I located 5 -6 doctors in Florida who will do fills. The first fill is $150 and every subsquent fill is $80. So combining a Florida golf vaction and a fill or two seems to be sensible.

On the funny side, I spoke with a "low-life-scum-sucking-pig-doctor" who is affilitated with the Credit Valley Hosp in Mississauga who offered to do as many fills as needed over the next five years for..........................EIGHT GRAND!!!!!!!................LOL I told him that when and if he ever got the internet he should check out some travel sites.................Travelling to Mexico 20 times or Mississauga.....tough decsion................;-)

Yes, I know that dr. He's actually very well known and he's a decent one at that. ... I have a friend who got her band with him, as her mom is a doctor at Credit Valley, as well. That's the standard pricing for foreign lapbander support. It's the same price at CIBO. It's a huge liability for them to take us on as clients -- every doctor as their own way of placing the band, etc.

I can only speak about CIBO, but they have an incredible support & education program that all of their banders are encouraged to participate in pre and post surgery, personal training and use of their private gym .... a lot of bonus' for people who otherwise wouldn't have a clue about what to do next. The band doesn't work without those things -- and A LOT of people don't do it, and aren't successful.

Ontario doctors are very well aware of the cost, and how much we paid to go over the boarder -- but they offer local support, followup & convenience -- something you can't get otherwise. So it's really a trade off .... Like you said, you might not even get the band, because you can find fills locally.

  8. No OHIP only pays for the Route en Y surgery or sleeve surgery. I keep thinking that the band would be better since it is less invasive..I just worry that if i go to Mexico for surgery that i will have a hard time finding a Dr willing to help when i get back to Canada..

I completely understand your concern -- I wouldn't do it now, knowing what I know about how things have quickly changed, and how doctors here will NOT TOUCH ME!

I do hear a lot about the sleeve on here ... but the weight loss seems drastically slower and far less than what I was seeing with the band.

While it's not nearly as difficult to deal with (getting the right fill spot, etc) I don't hear much about success on the forum (as of yet)
