TJ in the news currently

Recommended Posts

Hello ladies! My hubby just approached me this morning and said that I shouldn't go shopping in TJ when I go for our fill. He says that there's been turmoil in TJ regarding drug issues. I haven't been following the news lately. I have been preoccupied. Does anyone know of this? Anyone that's been there recently find any peculiar activity in the area?

I haven't heard anything at all and would be curious where he read it. Can you provide a link?

We were interviewed by FOX tv when we were shopping in TJ last Tues (the day after surgery). We took a "hotel" cab and asked him to also refer the cab company to come back with. Didn't notice any violence or drug activty, and the questions were regarding "how safe did we feel, where we satisfied with police presence" etc... as I said, we were in a group, Kate and her hubby Norm (who got to sample all the Tequila that we couldn't) my Sis Diane and myself. I think if you are in a group, you are fine.

HI HANNA, I KNOW THAT ABOUT 20 AMERICANS HAVE BEEN KIDNAPPED IN TJ IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS AND HELD FOR RANSOM. I DONT THINK THAT THERE IS ANY THING TO WORRY ABOUT.

I GOOGLED "TJ VIOLENCE" AND FOUND SOME INTERESTING READING. I WILL NOT TRAVEL AROUND TJ ALONE!! I REALIZE THAT STUFF LIKE THAT HAPPENS IN THE USA [DRUG ACTIVITY, GANG KILLINGS, ROBBERY....] BUT I'M NOT TAKING ANY CHANCES. HOPE EVERYONE IS ON THEIR GUARD AND DOESN'T TRAVEL ALONE!!

BE SAFE!! DARLENE

We didn't have any problems while we were in TJ, but I kind of figured something was going on because every hour or so we saw a military truck full of about 6 soldiers with automatic weapons in hand - with their fingers on the triggers (my husband said that he saw one guy reach up to scratch his nose and then instantly put his finger right back on the gun). So if nothing else I feel there is at least SOME local law enforcement on Revolution Ave.

When I was there 3/3 there were a lot of riots, not quite sure what part of town as I didn't see any, but on my last night police/ambulance sirens went off non-stop all night long.

I went down to Rev Ave alone and didn't feel comfortable and came right back, maybe I'm just a baby or wasn't really feeling that great.

I would travel alone again as long as i am escorted by OCC.

Honestly, none of this sounds particularly new and surprising to me. TJ doesn't exactly have a great reputation as far as drugs and law enforcement are concerned. It wasn't long ago that the local police had their guns taken away and replaced with slingshots because of the corruption on the police force. However, there are a great deal of American tourists that flow into TJ spending money and if they were in any serious danger the media would be all over it. Remember Natalee Holloway? Common sense rules will keep you safe in TJ and anywhere for that matter.

1) Keep to the safer places. Around the hotel and clinic should be fine.

2) Take taxis between destinations.

3) Travel in daylight.

4) Don't flash the cash.

Also, if you are looking to scare yourself, Googling Tijuana street violence is a good way to go, but if you're looking for a realistic look at the situation down there not so much. Go to reputable news websites like CNN or MSNBC, or whatever and do a search there, or go to http://travel.state.gov/ for any travel advisories from the US Department of State. I googled Tijuana street violence and got 31,100 hits. Then I googled Tacoma street violence and got 43,900 hits. Does this mean I'm going to feel endangered when I go to school now? Of course not. Does that mean Tacoma's less safe than TJ? Maybe, but Google is certainly not an accurate gauge for that. Keep your head about you, use common sense, and you'll be just fine.

Like Val said earlier: When we sent shopping on Mar 11, the day we were discharged from the clinic, we saw the same things, lots of police presence on Revolution Ave, and a few military trucks went by. Clynn is right-use common sense:use a cab from the hotels to get around, go during the daylight, grab someone to go with you (a great way to get moving post-op anyeways) and don't flash the money. I'd hate to see anyone miss out on a great experience, bartering etc. We had a great time and just kept an eye on what was going on around us. My family loved the souveniers and I'd do it agin in a heartbeat!

GOOD POST CLYNN. THERE'S BEEN PROBLEMS DOWN THERE FOR YEARS. JUST USE YOUR OWN GOOD JUDGEMENT. HECK, I DON'T WONDER DOWNTOWN SEATTLE STREETS AT NIGHT BY MYSELF, ONLY IN A GROUP OR THE HUBBY :) AND I WOULDN'T TJ EITHER.

Well, considering I remember the time I came out of work into the parking lot in Tacoma one night and was met by policemen with guns drawn, stalking a suspect near my car . . .

There aren't many cities that don't have areas I wouldn't want to be in, alone or not. You can choose to go out on your own while in TJ, but you can also choose to stick inside the hotel and clinic for the whole trip. The hotel has a nice interior courtyard around the pool if you want to take an outdoor stroll without going "outside."

Wow... lots of posting since I posted this topic. Thanks everyone... we will have our common sense thinking cap on. I wasn't ever worried about the center or Lucerna... I was concerned with Revolucion Ave.. where I want to do the bargain shoppping. Maybe we should offer to bring Francisco along as our body guard!!! Ha ha ha... I'll have to take a vote among our group on how they feel about this. Thank you all... my husband is always sooo concerned when I travel without him.. understandably..

Blessings and thanks for the great input from everyone!

I had surgery 3/11 and went shopping 3/12 felt very safe...hubby went with me and two other gals we went with. I got some great bargains and had a ball. I would recommend going with someone and taking a cab....and just use your common sense!

have fun and be safe

One of the ER doctors I work with is also in the military and works for homeland security told me things are bad right now and to not go alone anywhere. I explained how we are escorted by OCC from the airport to the hotel. He suggests to stay at the hotel at this point in time due to increased violence against American tourists in Mexico. Just be sensible and dont go out alone.

Thanks for all the info ladies!

I'm choosing to stay "close to home" (the hotel) after my surgery until I fly home.

Yes, the shopping and bartering can be fun - but I think I'll experience that when it's safer, and maybe when I'm not in a vulnerable physical state (limited running) - like maybe when I come back down for a fill - several pounds lighter!!

HI EVERYONE,

I JUST READ A STORY ON THE MSN HOME PAGE THAT'S VERY INTERESTING. IF YOU GOOGLE "DRUG TRADE TYRANNY ON THE BORDER" IT WILL COME UP. I DIDN'T REALIZE HOW BAD THE DRUG TRADE IS DOWN THERE. [NOT THAT IT'S NOT BAD IN THE STATES! :( ]
