  1. LOLOLOLOL

    this is sooo funnnyyy

Iam one of those Weird people who are on elliptical for

up to 100 mins or more

I use to burn 1200-1500 calories each day about 2 weeks a go

until people on this board asked me not to.....

I am in love with this machine

Now I am on this machine for 70 min total and burn 900-1000 calories.

then I use StairMaster for 20 min

    weights for 20 mins

still struggling with my weight loss !!!!!!!!!!!!

If you enjoy working out this much, you need to increase your food intake.

  2. Dana,

I was just wondering how you have been doing with your trainers advice. Did you do the protien shakes?

    Carrie

    Hey Carrie,

I have been doing protein shake most of the time as I am super super tight during the day. I am only down like 3 lbs. Pretty frustrating, but, I am keeping on! :) I have been doing 3 shakes a day and my evening meal most days. (I do a double for bfast) There have been a few days that I felt loose, so I did chili or eggs or turkey bacon for lunch. When I do that I obviously don't have a shake. But, I would say 85% of the time, I am all liquid before 3pm.

  3. I had VERY BAD port pain for months! I took my heating pad to bed every night. But, I can handle pain, so I rarely complained. It did not depress me because I was dropping the lbs. Two days ago, I bent over to get something out of a lower kitchen cabinet and I felt my port pinch. That day and all day yesterday was difficult. Every move I made I was hurting, it was like the porting was stabbing me. But, today I am fine. It is still a little swollen, but that is it.

Try to stay positive. I would not even think about removing your band at this point. Give it some time, I am sure it will ease up, mine did!

  4. I agree, 40 is not enough at all. In fact, according to the US Food pyramid guidelines, women need a minimum of 46. The amount of 40 is for small children. And that is if you are of normal weight. Heavier people need more, but according to Dr. Miranda, not too much. It's a hard question and I think it should be very individualized. According to Dr. Miranda and the nutritionist I am currently working with, for me, protein should fall between 60 and 90 grams a day. No more than 90 or then the protein begins to be stored as fat.

I agree Mona, my trainer told me a healthy amount for me is 80 (at this current weight).

  5. Wow, Dana!! Great post--thanks for all the good information! I'm printing this out for a friend. Thank you!

You are welcome! I just do not believe the standard 40-60 grams will do. Like I said, I literally feel like crap if I don't get enough. By these calculations, I need 90 a day!!! I feel the best when my protein levels are up & the protein comes from meat/bean sources. I am now limiting myself to 2 protein drinks a day. The rest comes from my food.

  6. FYI:You may need more protein. If you get headachy or dizzy, increase it. I can't function unless I have 60 and I normally do about 80.

I would recommend figuring it up. I got this off google

What is protein? How much protein do we need? Is it possible to eat too much protein? These are important questions for people following a low carb way of eating, who usually are replacing part of their carbohydrate intake with protein.

    What is protein?

Protein is one of the basic building blocks of the human body, being about 16 percent of our total body weight. Muscle, hair, skin, and connective tissue are mainly made up of protein. However, protein plays a major role in all of the cells and most of the fluids in our bodies. In addition, many of our bodies' important chemicals -- enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, and even our DNA -- are at least partially made up of protein. Although our bodies are good at “recycling” protein, we use up protein constantly, so it is important to continually replace it.

Proteins are made up of smaller units called amino acids. Our bodies cannot manufacture nine amino acids, so it is important to include all these amino acids in our diets. Animal proteins such as meat, eggs, and dairy products have all the amino acids, and many plants have some of them. Learn more about amino acids in our diet.

How much protein do we need?

Our protein needs depend on our age, size, and activity level. The standard method used by nutritionists to estimate our minimum daily protein requirement is to multiply the body weight in kilograms by .8, or weight in pounds by .37. This is the number of grams of protein that should be the daily minimum. According to this method, a person weighing 150 lbs. should eat 55 grams of protein per day, a 200-pound person should get 74 grams, and a 250-pound person, 92 grams.

Another way to compute protein needs has to do with lean body mass. This method is discussed in the Zone Diet and Protein Power books. Learn About This Method

Do people who exercise need more protein?

Although it is controversial, there is evidence that people engaging in endurance exercise (such as long distance running) or heavy resistive exercise (such as body building) can benefit from additional protein in their diets. One prominent researcher in the field recommends 1.2 to 1.4 grams per kilogram of body weight per day for endurance exercisers and 1.7 to 1.8 grams per kg per day for heavy strength training.

But shouldn’t protein intake be a percentage of total calories?

Quite a few programs and nutritionists quote percentage of calories, usually in the range of 10 percent to 20 percent, as a way to figure out how much protein a person needs to consume daily. This is a rough estimate of a person's minimum protein needs. It works because usually larger and more active people need more calories, so the more calories they need, the more protein they will get.

Where this falls down is when people are eating diets which are lower in calories for any reason, conscious or not. People who are ill or losing weight, for example, do not need less protein just because they are eating fewer calories.

What happens if we don’t eat enough protein?

Unlike fat and glucose, our body has little capacity to store protein. If we were to stop eating protein, our body would start to break down muscle for its needs within a day or so.

Is it OK to eat a lot more protein than the minimum recommendations?

This is the crucial question for people on diets which are higher in protein than usual, as low-carb diets tend to be. In a review of the research, the National Academy of Sciences reported that the only known danger from high protein diets is for individuals with kidney disease. After careful study, they recommend that 10 percent to 35 percent of daily calories come from protein. They point out that increased protein could be helpful in treating obesity. There is also accumulating evidence that extra protein may help prevent osteoporosis.

Extra protein can be broken down into glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis. On low carb diets, this happens continually. One benefit of obtaining glucose from protein is that it is absorbed into the bloodstream very slowly, so it doesn’t cause a rapid blood sugar increase.

  7. doesn't liquid Tylenol have a massive amount of alcohol & corn syrup (sugar) ?

    lotsa empty calories.

    buyer beware!

    Lindsay,

This is my Fill Dr.'s instructions:

** If you are taking aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDS) pain relievers, please inform the office so you can be placed on proper medication.

Tylenol is what he has me take. At this point, I can not take the capsules. So, liquid is what I have to take. I don't think they make it sugar free, but I don't have much of a choice. However,I do not have to take it very often.

  8. Hi guys I am having an EGD done tomorrow make sure my stomach is going to be good for the Lap band i'm sure most have had this done. DOES it HURT??? I just want to know what to expect thanks everyone

Sounds like someone is taking advantage of you, unless you have a previous medical condition that might prevent you from having surgery??? I dont think any of Dr. O's patients have gotten this test.

  9. does anyone know when it's okay to start excercising after getting the band? For some reason either 3 weeks or 3 months sticks in my mind?

You have to wait 3 months to do any ab workouts. (I waited 5). I began briskly walking after 3 weeks & started on my elliptical at 5 weeks. I think you should do what is comfortable to you, just don't lift anything real heavy for awhile.

  10. I am not a runner but I find the spot to be amazing, the shape and tone of the body of a runner is something I am going to have! I start a clinic tonight at the Running Room called Learn to Run. The goal at the end of the 10 week class is to be able to run 5km (3.1miles). Running is the one hurdle I have to over come in order to complete my Triathlon that I am signing up for this August.

I will let you know how it goes in the AM.

    Jenelle

OMG! Thank you so much for telling me about this. I am signing up for the Breast Cancer 3 day (60 miles in 3 days) and this will be great!!!! I just looked at the website & I am going to do one too! WOO HOO!

  11. Hate to brag, but I can't help it. I just got banded yesterday, and I FEEL GREAT!!!

I pretty much felt great from about 30 minutes on!

No nausea, just a little gas, a little soreness--but I could even lay on my side (carefully!) during the overnight stay at the clinic!

So newbies, don't panic--everyone is different--with any luck you'll have an easy time of it, too! :P

Sounds like me. I didn't have all the gas pains people talk about in their shoulder etc. I went shopping the next morning. However, once I got home and was sitting a lot, my port got very tender.

So, try not to sit in one position for too too long. There were definitely many times within the first 6 weeks that I had a heating pad around my port area.

  12. (((((((((((((Jacklyn))))))))))))

Big hugs to you! Congrats on your pending anniversary. You've lost a small toddler! The life changes you've made with the band have not been easy and you've accomplished so much. Think about the last time in your life you've lost 48 lbs in a single year (for one) and maintained that loss.

    :)

There are some very knowledgeble posters on this board who have experienced a journey similar to yours, you've posted to the right place.

    Hugs.

BTW when you hit 50 I'll send you the "Hawaii Five 0hhh" wav file so you'll be able to do your victory dance! That will be fun and it's a catchy, motivating tune.

    xo

    Robbyn,

Thanks for the encouragement this morning! :) I have been stuck for 2 months now. Only down 5 lbs since Jan.7. UGH!!! It can be really frustrating. I keep doing what I am supposed to do & think one day my body is going to catch up and drop a lot in one week.......

Everyone is different. I was banded in October and I am down 45 lbs. Other people were banded that same month and are already down 55-60.

It is important not to compare your weight loss to others. And, Lord knows that normally I would have already started gaining weight & lost interest in a "diet".

This truly changes your life! I now feel in control. Though it may be coming off slow (for now) atleast it is not creeping back up!

Just wanted to say Thanks for positive words......

    (((((((((((((((ROBBYN))))))))))))))))

  13. You are doing awesome Dana. Here are some guidelines I received from my fill dr. It sounds as though you are doing exactly what you should be doing.

    EMERGENT/URGENT BAND PROBLEMS

What is the difference between Emergent, Urgent and Normal band problems?

EMERGENT: Harsh vomiting (different than pb’ing), unable to swallow saliva or any fluid. You need to go to the Emergency Room and have them give you an IV to hydrate you. You need to tell them you have a lap band and need to have a fluoroscopy to see if it has slipped or you are closed off due to swelling. You need to take your surgeons phone number with you so they can call and talk to him.

Dehydration: symptoms include dizziness, low blood pressure, disorientation, not able to make decisions appropriately. If someone else thinks you are in need help, you probably are because you are too ill to make that decision. It takes more than 24 hours to become dehydrated.

URGENT: When you have frequent throwing up 3-4 or more times per week, you need to be seen by your fill clinic to get a bit of saline removed. If you have heartburn or reflux, you need to be on over the counter Prilosec twice a day, possibly remove a bit of saline from your band. If you let it go on, you risk slippage of the band. After you have a bit taken out, stay on liquids for 1 week, mushy for 1 week, introduce solids slowly.

If your band slams shut after you have had a fill, you should return to your clinic for a bit of unfill. Don’t let it go on too long, you risk slipping your band and dehydration. This prevents and ER visit.

Normal Problems: You can’t eat solids in the morning. Try drinking something hot. This may open your band up and allow you to eat. If you can’t eat in the mornings, try going on liquids for 3 days, then start eating breakfast, larger lunch, smaller dinner. Sometimes this will reset your eating habits. If you just can’t eat in the morning, but can eat later in the day, go ahead and drink a protein drink in the morning to get your protein in. We normally say no liquid proteins, but once in awhile is ok. The whole process behind the band is to eat our protein in solid form, not liquids.

Pb’ing, yakking, tossing your cookies: Are you eating too fast? Not chewing enough? Taking too big a bite? Swallowing hot things too soon? Maybe you need to coat your meat with BBQ sauce or something to help it go down. Try eating with a baby spoon to make sure you are taking smaller bites.

IF you have the flu: You should be fine, but if you are throwing up too much, some fluid out of you band would help. You can drink flat 7-up, gatoraid, apple juice, whatever, forget the calories, just stay hydrated.

    WHEN TO CALL YOUR DOCTOR:

Get an unfill if you can’t swallow your spit.

Get an unfill if you can’t eat regular food.

Get an unfill if you are having heartburn or reflux.

Call your doctor emergently if you are throwing up blood. You might have a tear or rupture in your esophagus. Be sure to tell them you have a band. They may think you have an abdominal problem. Not all problems are related to the band. Just make sure they have the information anyway.

Go to the ER if you haven’t been able to drink any liquids for 24 hours.

Call your surgeon with any concerns.

DO NOT LIVE WITH THROWING UP FOR MORE THAN A FEW DAYS. THE WEIGHT YOU ARE LOSING IS WATER, NOT FAT!

This is not the way to lose weight. You are depleting yourself of needed vitamins and nutrients your body needs to survive.[/quote

Thank you LisaLaw! That is awesome!

Just an update, I felt my band was much looser yesterday. So, i had 2 pieces of bacon with no problem. Later in the day, I had a small chili. I was encouragedto be able to eat early in the day. TODAY, totally different story. I PB'd my bfast (which was at 11:00). It was so terrible. I do not want to go through that again. So, I will stick with drinks a while longer. (just like checking to see what I can handle)

  14. Hey. Not sure what multi Vitamin you take, BUT, I started on Vitaband Mixed Berry, by Bariatric Advantage. (chewable)

My fill doctor sells them in his office and told me this vitamin has ALL we need. They are great because they

were specifically made for Bandsters. Anyway, I hope your hair loss stops! Keep up the great work!

  15. Even though this forum is through the OCC not everyone on here was banded by them and other doctors have different post-op diets that include mushy food, etc. and from the seven months I've been on here, people that are banded other places sometimes are not clear on their post-op diets or other things and end up coming here for information and help.

Very true! I know someone who was banded 4 days ago in the states and she is already eating mashed potatoes. Every Dr. has different rules.

  16. Actually, I like this post best; this is exactly what this forum is about. Different opinions but everyone talking about, and taking out of it what works best for them. Without getting personal or doing the High School thing. I always tell people that we're a large group with differing opinions - but that's what makes us so damn cool.

So awesome post, thank you for your reply.

    Best,

    Lisa

    Lisa,

I agree! No problems here. Thanks for voicing your opinion. I will let everyone know how I am doing. I definitely don't want to live on liquids forever. I like food too much. lol

  17. Regular Muscle Milk, that is true It is high in calorie because it is intended for building muscles. But, the Musclie Milk Light (premades) is only 100 calories and can be used for weight managment & the Chocolate Milk flavor is fabulous. I buy them by the case at Costco.

I am using this Cookies in Cream to change things up and throw another taste in there. I also have not been getting enough calories in my day, another reason he said I probably plateued. He is not a lapband specialist, but he definitly knows what he is talking about with diet and exercise. He told me what I should be doing with all the working out I am doing etc.

I will not have more than one of the Syntha 6 per day because it is higher in calories. I have room in my day to allow for the extra calories of one though....

I am doing Heavy Weight Circuit Training at a slow pace. Meaning, in the past when I do the machines I just grab them and and do them as fast as I can. This trainer has taught me to take 20 seconds on a rep. And we do each machine for 3 minutes 15 secnds. For instance if you are doing the leg press, take a complete 10 seconds to push it down and 10 seconds to bring it all the way back up. This way your muscles are constantly ripping and not getting a break. He said you will get faster results. So far, I am really impressed!!!! It is a very hard work out, I am really pushing my self to get the best out of it.

  18. Dana,

I really agree with Karen, and to be honest, (I'm not trying to be mean) but it’s not great nutritional advice and goes against what the OCC recommends. You can follow it, and you most likely will lose weight, but it’s not something we can sustain long term. Part of what I am doing is learning how to eat right long term for good health. Drinking 4 to 5 of these a day, that’s also (if I remember right) up to 100 grams of protein a day. This seems a bit high to me. (And I use to be like Karen, I had my one protein shake in the AM since I had a hard time eating solids in the morning).

And my son’s a personal trainer and use to do things like this, but later took another class on nutrition (which I pushed him to do) and stopped it, he is focused on real food, not to the extent of what I am, but he’s getting there and I’m really proud of him.

Based on something that happened to a family member I have cut Splenda completely out of my diet. (And after learning more from Dr. Mark, I completely believe it was a great idea). And, you wont find Splenda in Dr. Weil’s restaurant, there’s a reason for that.

We don't eat that much so I eat real sugar, honey or anything natural in small amounts. There are going to be some pretty cool studies coming out in the next few years about what all the fake food is doing to us - most likely a big culprit in what is making people in the States obese. Let alone what all the chemicals are doing to our bodies. Sorry if I sound like I'm on a soap box, I really do want to help.

    http://www.womentowomen.com/nutritionandwe...ss/splenda.aspx

We all have to make our own decisions and whatever you decide you’ll have our support.

    Take care,

    Lisa

I understand what both of you are saying, but I also know ME. I know that I only have 2.5 in my band and I AM NOT getting an un fill. I am not puking up liquids, I am fine. All of my fills have loosened. I will not pay 250.00 to get an unfill 1 week later when ALL of you say, Can you keep down liquids? The answer is YES I can, and I can eat later in the day, so a fill is not an option....that is crazy.

ALSO...Before the lapband, I was all about eating meat. 100 grams of protein was NOTHING. a 3.5 oz serving of steak has 30 grams of protein & I would easily eat a 12 oz steak. So, I think I can handle more protein.

As far as going AGAINST the OCC, I don't look at it that way. I have followed all the rules & my weight loss has been great! But I have freakin plateaued! And right now, I can't eat solids before 2 or 3 pm, not alot of options. So, sorry you feel I am going against my Doctor, I personally don't think Dr. Ortiz would feel that way if I called him up.

So, thanks for your opinions, but I think I will be fine for the next few weeks as I give it time to loosen.

I am not one who believes I have to give up Splenda and go All Organic at this stage in my life.

  19. Also, just to clarify, I I have not relied on all liquids until the last 2 weeks. I did the Kick Start Challenge and now I am tight so I am choosing to do it. It is important for everyone to know, I lost ALL my weight eating protein first, then carbs. But, for the last 7 weeks I have not lost. I definitely needed a fill. I feel it will loosen up a bit more and I will be back to eating normally. I don't think a few weeks of shakes during the day will hurt anyone as I will be getting ALL my protein. Then a healthy dinner. :D

  20. Dana, while I am glad you found a protein powder that you like (I like that one too), are you not eating solids in the day? Are you sure you are not too tight? I know you said you lost a couple lbs on liquids, but really our bands are designed to eat solids. With that said, I personally eat a liquid breakfast (juice and 1 cup of FF milk) because I work out right after waking and I can't workout right after food. But for the rest of the day, snacks and my meals, I eat solids only. I was like you at one point, relying on mostly liquids and I really didn't lose much. But once I started forcing myself to take the time to eat, protein first etc... just like they tell you, I was much more satisfied and lost (and am losing again) steadily. Also 4 protein shakes a day seems like so much to me. Aren't those like 220 calories each? That really will add up for you, calorie-wise. You might be better off trying to eat small meals as we are meant to.... Just adding my thoughts here. I am worried that you are too tight! It's just not worth it....

    Karen

    Hey Karen,

Thanks for your concern for me, means a lot!

Well, I am working out alot so I am burning calories. BUT, I am only going to have this brand in the am before I leave the house. It is higher in calories, 198 per serving, 54 from fat. The Muscle Milk premades are 100 calories. I have tried eggs, oatmeal in the morning and on about the second or third bite I get the tightness in my chest. I had my third fill last monday, and I do not think it is too tight because by 3pm I can eat solid foods. If I have any removed I will be back where I was and I know I need restriction. As long as my food stays down, and I can eat comfortably after 2 or 3 pm, I am fine with that for the time being. I would like to get some more weight off. I can also tell my band has loosened since last Monday after the fill. So, I am going to do as he suggests and do the liquids during the day for 3 weeks, maybe by then I can get back to my protein for bfast. I am going to try 3 drinks instead of 4 though, I thought it may be excessive to have 4. (I just dont think I will be that hungry)

  21. My trainer told me today that I need to be drinking 4 protein shakes a day (8oz each) now that my band is so tight to eat during the day. He explained how if we load up our evening meal with all our protein that our body can not process it, so then it is stored as fat and cant be burned.

I always knew I needed to eat 4-5 times a day, but honestly I haven't dont that since the band. I eat 3 times and then a couple snacks. He told me to stay away from the snacks. Drink these, or Muscle Milk light (premades) for atleast 3 weeks and I will see a difference in the scale.

He explained how it is important NOT to eat sugar. So, your body goes into Ketosis and you lose the weight. He told me that he was sure that is why I have plateued.

I was very frustrated because I lost a few lbs on liquids the last couple weeks and this morning I weighed (after eating over the weekend) and I am up 2 lbs!!!!!

SO, I am going to do what he suggests and see.

This protein powder is awesome! It tastes like a milkshake. My husband got me the cookies and cream and I am freaking out! It is fabulous! I just had to share. Because I know all of us have protein drinks! No more drinking baby formula! I can't wait to try the other flavors!!

FYI...2 grams of sugar sweetend with Splenda.
