  1. I've been reading the same thing. I have had my band since March 2009 and have had absolutely no problems. When you consider the large number of people that have been banded I think the ones getting further surgery are a small percentage. It is good to know that there are other things available though.
  2. I stayed in the hospital only one night and went back to the Marriott after. They have juices for you after your surgery, They take very good care of you. I had a nurse assigned to me and she came to get me up after the surgery. She gave my shoulders a good massage because that's where the anesthesia gas settles sometimes and can cause you to ache. Then she got me up, held my hand and walked me in the hallway. I felt very well cared for. It's an amazing place. When I got back to the hotel they had the clear broths you will need. The dining room is used to dealing with OCC patients so they have what we need. I had broth and popsicles. One thing I might suggest is that you get some liquid vitamins to take with you and maybe some liquid Tylenol.
  3. Don't give up. You know you can get a loan for at least half now, get out there and make the other half. I agree that you should not take the loan now. If you take it and put it in a savings account you will never make in interest what you pay on the loan therefor you would be losing money. Know that you can get that loan the next time you are ready to go for it. Don't give up on yourself. Right now places will be hiring part time for the Christmas season. When I was younger I worked the season at Macy's. I am a teacher and we don't make a lot so I always had extra jobs. If you want it you can do it. Hang in there. NEVER GIVE UP!!!!!
  4. You should be OK and you are close. I live in NJ so I stick around. I do the tourist thing in San Diego for a day.
  5. I think you're just discovering what you can't eat any more. I can't eat rice or hard pretzels. Do you have that response to all foods or just some and what if you don't get in a car. If it happens with everything I would call the OCC.
  6. No, steel cut. Steel-cut oats are whole grain oats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces by steel rather than being rolled. They are golden in color and resemble small rice pieces. Steel-cut oats are also known as coarse-cut oats, pinhead oats, or Irish oats. This form of oats takes longer to prepare than instant or rolled oats due to its minimal processing, typically 15-30 minutes to simmer (much less if pre-soaked). The flavor of the cooked product is described as being chewier and nuttier than instant oats. Scottish Oats or Scottish Oatmeal are sometimes confused with steel-cut oats. Scottish Oats are steamed steel-cut oats that are then ground by stones into an oat meal. Steel-cut oats may have a lower glycemic index than instant oatmeal (42 vs. 66, respectively), causing a lesser spike in insulin levels when consumed.
  7. So I had this cantaloupe in my refrigerator and didn't want to cut it because if you cut it it starts to go bad at that moment. The rest of my family is not into fruit so I knew I would waste most of it. Then...AN IDEA!!!! I have the Magic Bullet! I could bulletize it! Well imagine my surprise when this little cantaloupe gave me a creamy, light smoothie. I thought it would be of a more watery consistency because melons are mostly water but this was almost like a milkshake without adding any milk!!! It was nice and ripe so it was sweet with no sugar added. I threw in one scoop of protein powder and it will be my breakfast tomorrow!!!! Who knew?
  8. Thanks for that info. I put about 3 Tbsp in my smoothie this morning and have not been hungry all day! I keep mine in the refrigerator because I hear it can go rancid. I have had it for a while and it is still good.
  9. Cooked oats are just a little creamier. Steel cut oats are supposed to be better nutritionally than rolled oats.
  10. Ok ladies and gents, I am experimenting with smoothie recipes. Let me just tell you to NEVER put uncooked steel cut oats into your smoothie. Regular rolled oats are soft but steel cuts are hard little kernels. They don't soften up in the mixing! I like my smoothies a little thicker so I feel as though there is something in my stomach and I like the creaminess of oats. I have learned my lesson though...I will cook them first!LOL
  11. Your stuff is in your room. No need to worry, it's a lot easier to get to patient's room in hospitals in the US than at the OCC. No stranger can just walk in off of the street like they can in our clinics or hospitals.
  12. I just ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I thought long and hard about it because I know it wasn't such a good thing to do. I was worried that I would get stuck and I was chastising myself because I know it would have been better to have a protein packed smoothie. But you know what? I have been wanting a PB&J for days now. I walked past the Uncrustables at the store and my eyes lingered there. Every time I saw a commercial with kids having it for lunch at school, I wanted it. So, I ate it! I feel good, the desire for it is out of my system and, I'll eat right for the rest of the day. I guess the point I am trying to make is that sometimes you just have to stray. As long as it's not every day it's not such a bad thing. The fact that I wanted it for days and that it was not just an impulse let me give in to myself. I'm done with it now and have no desire to eat more PB&Js.
  13. You are now closer than you were yesterday. Keep plugging away, you will get there.
  14. One of the members posted that some people said she had lost enough. That led me to think about what happened to me years ago. I went on Nutri System and lost about 65 pounds. I am 5'9" and when I got to about 170 (size 12) the men started to comment that I could stop now, I had lost enough. Strangely though the women agreed with me when I said I wanted to lose another 10 pounds. I have a large frame so if I drop to 150 I look gaunt and sickly. I wonder how much females are influenced by what we see in the magazines that we read. We, the women, seem to take our cues from the fashion and modeling industry whereas men just know what they like women to look like. I know that being healthy should be #1 in everyone's book yet that doesn't mean we don't also want to look good. It's just an observation I've made and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed anything during their weight loss or if anyone has any opinions about what an influence our society has on us.
  15. That's great! I'm going to Walmart today to see if I can get just an accessory package. When I first got my bullet which was before I even thought about banding, it wasn't that important to me. Now as I sit here sipping my morning smoothie, I'm wanting more parts. If I can't buy just the add ons I'll buy the whole thing, it's a great price.
  16. Definitely call them. One of the indications of an overfill is coughing at night. Did you have it done at the OCC? They give you a piece of papers that tell you what to watch for.
  17. I worry about my protein if I have a smoothie for breakfast so I came up with this. I use the liquid protein shot I bought at Walmart(fruit punch flavor). It has 26g of protein. I add a little yogurt,a handful of frozen berries and whip it up in my Magic Bullet. It was a little stiff so I put in some water I had flavored with Crystal Lite!!! It tastes great and I have my protein. I really didn't like the taste of the protein shot on its own.
