  1. Hi Everyone, How horrible to have that side effect to surgery run in your family. And you're right, walking is the best cure for gas, and for a few weeks after surgery I had gas. Thank god for Gas-X, and learning that warm liquids are better than cold. The post surgery eating plan(hate it when I call it a diet, reminds me of what I am not doing anymore.constantly going on or about to start a diet), the 3 weeks of liquid was not bad. After the initial clear liquids, yon go to drinkable yogart and protein shakes and cream soup. Those wil taste like the best stuff you've ever eaten. And three weeks is such a short time, compared to a lifetime of not losing weight. Very short term and not bad at all, even tho it sounds not all that great, II didn't really get hungry, although I have others tell me they did .................cream soup.suggest Campbell's Soup Gardennay Variety, the Wild Mushroom is delish! If you have any questions, and want to email me directly, it's ktbaillargeon@gmail.com, I'll answer any question I can. Cheers, katie
  2. Hi Feather, The one thing I was glad I took was comfortable walking shoes, in my case a real comforty sandel, cause waking is a really good way of releasing the gas one ends up after surgery. I also found out warm liquids are far easier to drink that cold ones, so I took a few bags of my fav tea. The Marriot doesn't have a micro but they do have a coffee maker which did quite well. Also us OCC patients get room service for our meals.......if you can call chicken broth meals. Actually I didn't feel hungry at all, even now I need to watch to not miss a meal cause hungry doesn't strike me like it use to, I was a grazer and that's gone. Also, avoid drinking of any sort for at least 30 minutes before you lie down, otherwise the gas is uncomfortable. Later the sort of golden rule is no drinking anything within 30 minutes of eating. To do so means major gas stitches. I didn't gave surgery pain, I had some soreness, but nothing to wirte home about. Unless you don't mind artificial sweeteners, then you can have the popcicles at the hotel. Personally I found them gross. Walmart is only a few blocks from the hotel, and they have Vitamin drinks etc, but warning, if you're going to pay cash, you will need Pesos cause they don't take US dollars, but they do take credit cards. If you want to use cash, your bank will be able to get some Mexican Pesos before yiou leave. I also to some sugarfree hard candies cause dry mouth comes with the territory of surgery, Hall cough drops are also helpful for any sore throat or dry mouth. If you have any questions, do ask...everything you're thinking and feeling, we've been there too, so we do know how you are feeling. When did you say your surgery was??? Cheers, Katie

  4. Hi Olivia, Congratz on your first 12, so excited for you. Oh yeah those stomach sounds are normal, my guess is the nerves settling down. I have a cup of tea or a little bit of hot cream soup, usually does the trick. K:)

    Incisions

Hi Not sure where you are having your surgery done, I had my at OCC. I had 4 incisions which were about 1/3 of an inch or less, and one which was 1 inch. I believe that the doctor used a surgical glue verses sutures and it washed off about the 10-12 days after surgery. I could shower the day after surgey. I didn't have a drian, and I am so happy I didn't. I think it may depends if the surgern decides to use one. None of the 3 other gals who had their surgery done when I was there didn't have drains either.. It may also be the type of WLS you have, from what I have learned since my surgery VSG and BY Pass surgeries do use drains. Hope this helps....definately ask your surgeon so you know what to expect..
  6. Hi Congratz on your up coming surgery. Had mine Jan 27,2011. I took a small'ish thermos and I was so happy I did. When I was at the Marriot, the afternoon/evening broth was excellant, but the morning stuff looked like cloudy dish water with some chicken fat floating on top. Yes, I have mentionned it to OCC, so maybe it's improved. With the thermos, the restaurant would fill it up for me at night(after having boiling water in for 5 minutes) and it stayed hot till the next afternoon. The other thing I took was a couple of cup a soups, I didn't ended up using them thanks to the thermos, but the other 2 gals who were there at the same time loved them. From this forum, I found a suggestion to take some Gas-X strips, and I was glad I took them too. I also found out that when you go through airport secuirty, if you declare the full thermos, and tell them you can only eat this and must have ti frequently, they let you take it with you. I had asked for help from the airline and was in a wheel chair and it was the porter who told me I could do this and how to do. Hope this helps....

  12. Okay I am offically blind, I don't have a pic and I see a little person nor a little enevelop. What I do see under the pics is something called 'warn status' under that is are 2 headings..'find my content' and 'display name history' Good grief Charlie Brown............under the other peoples names son't see the little person etc.........I know I am teck challen...

  13. Thanks for adding me as a friend.mind telling me how you did that. For the life of me I can't see anything remotely close to saying click here to add a friend....HELP PLS....lol

  15. Hi, Wow you're time is sooo close. The meds are different with each surgeon. I had a pain med, which I think I used once, some anti gas meds, and a med to help reduce the amount of stomach acid during the early weeks when you are on liquids ie, first clear liquids, then protein shakes and yogarts. The do help, I also took with me Gas-X strips which helped alot. Now I use Papaya Enzymes if I happen to get a gas now. Stay in touch and let us all know how you are doing, Cheers, Katie
  16. Hi Sorry to hear you are having a rough go of it. I had my plication done at OCC on Jan 27/11. I had some horrible gas cramps...here's what I used to settle them down...1. those meds they gave you(green capsules I think they are, 4 weeks 1cap twice daily; Gas-X strips and when that didn't do the job........I walked and walked...then I started chewing Papaya Enzyme, found at Walmart in vit/supplement area. The later works so great, I still use it when I get gas. In the early stages most common cause of gas are......from the gas they inflate your tummy so see better during surgery. All that gas has to come out, either burping or passing gas. Walking helps with the passing gas, the enzyme helps with the gas up top. Also I still get gas is I drink too much at one time........short gulping is my enemy........and you'll be on your protein shake etc stage............trying to put too much down in a short period of time causes gas, big time gas. Later so will drinking within eating a solid, or drinking with a solid. You can call OCC, from your list of contact phone numbers, or send a message to your corrdinator, she will get it to the dr quickly. They are there to help you through every stage. Hope this gives you some ideas to try, Cheers, K:)
  17. Oh right, forgot the Atkins choice is a longer pre op............watch out for the high protein and keeping things moving inside, if ya know what I mean....lol... Sorry just figured out how to read a post from you, but still lost on the add friends thing......lol

  18. Hey, How are you doing? Onto the soft solids now, how goes your weight loss? I didn't loose anything this week, think it's because I got a bit of constipation giong on due to the high protein diet....will get something for it tomorrow,,,,or maybe with everything tha't been happening here, too much stress.....we'll see Katie

  19. Thanks for adding me as a friend, I'm not sure how one does that I see assorts of headings but not noe that sats 'add a friend. Ok enough of my lack of teck skills...When are you set for surgery and where are you having it done? Cheers, Katie

  20. No silly queries...that was the time fame I was on, and so was 2 other gals who had their surgery when I did. I did ask my cordinator to give my email address to others having surgery the same day I was asking them to email me as fellow surgery pals. I ended up corresponding with before and since our respective surgeries. All three of us had plicaiton. You'll do fine, who is your surgeon??? Keep your questions coming....................lol.....we all did too. K:)
  21. Hi Yolanda, I think it's pretty common for family and friends to not understan a weight struggle unless they have been down that road, and even then, we each see ourselves in our world differently. I had my surgery Jan 27,2011 in TJ at the OCC. With all the times I'd been in the hospital, that had to be the cleanest hosptial setting I'd come across. The staff is professional as you would find in any large North American medical facility. They are there for their patients, and understand your nervousness and fears. We all have them. I guess I was a little more informed cause I have lived in Baja for a few years not that long ago, so I knew there were excellent facilities. In fact the most painfree root canal and then a crown put in while I was in LP(3 hours north of Cabo). So I wasn't nervous about the doctor I chose. I was nervous about just getting it done and over with. Once I had made the decision, I wanted it now like 'now'.....lol If yoyu have any questions, ww care here to support you. You know that old saying...no query too small or unimportant, if you're wondering about something, well then one of use will have had similar wonderings..so do ask...or vent...somedays ya just might need somewhere safe to vent. K:)
  22. Thanks for the info.....I tried a power shot from Baractic Advantage, OMG....it was so thiick and smelt horrible.attempts to drink it ended up with a fast run to the bathroom. I was going to use the containers for travel but no matter what I did(soak in baking soda....boiling in vinegar) and nothing took the smell away. Is that sort of what those ones you use are like??? Thx
  23. Welcome to the Plicater's.......I had my plication done Jan 27th, 2011 at OCC with Dr Ortiz. And with the exception of being out of it on surgery day, my challenges have been pretty usual. Initially you feel a lot of gas, because they sort of inflate you tummy area with gas to give them a clear vision for your surgery. All that gas has to come out, so it comes as burping or rooty-tooting. It can be presistant in the first 10-14 days and sporatic after that. The good news here is you have a legit reason for letting a few go right...............lol..........Everyone I've spoke to has gone through this. The other thing is each one of us have had lots if not most of the same feeling pre-op as you are and will experience, so just let them feelings hang out, we'll hold your hand through it all. I'm pretty sure I speak for everyone else whos had this surgery...we're here for you, to give you as much support as you need/want. And no question is too odd or seem silly to ask.......so ask away. You'll be joining us on the loser's bench very soon. Cheers, Katie
  24. Hey O. I just got the protein powder for Costco to make shakes to try and up my protein on days where it's not making the grade. It's called Preimer, it's the Costco brand and they told me if it doesn't work for me for any reason, to bring it back and they would refund it. Got a Costco close by?? Counting down the days to your first soft food meal, any idea what you're likely to want???? Wonder often how you are making out. K:)
