Hi. I was banded by Dr. Ortiz on 12/10/04. I and my family are so happy w/my results and with Drs. Ortiz & Martinez, I just booked my daughter Hanna, age 17 1/2 for banding on May 27th. We're really excited. She's 5'1" and weighs 207 lbs. She also is pre-diabetic, and she's really looking forward to getting healthy.

Well, we're back! Everything went smoothly & Drs. Ortiz, Martinez & the whole staff were really terrific to Hanna. She felt great afterwards, banding was Friday, we were trapising around San Diego on Sunay. Now that we're home, she's been resting (since 6:00 am. Monday). Small amount of pain, but she's certainly up and around. Tomorrow it's back to school for her.

Thanks for posting after Hanna's procedure. With great support from Mom she is blessed! I am so happy for her. My procedure with Dr. Ortiz is later this month and you can imagine how I feel. I would love to hear from more people who have been banded over the years. I imagine the reason that they don't post too often is that they are enjoying their new lease on life and not looking back. But I'd sure love to hear from them. Thanks again for taking the time!

You should check out Lapbandtalk.com It's generally a good site, lots of info. My only advice is always listen to your doctor & follow his advice especially if it's Dr.Ortiz & Martinez...don't take medical advice chat boards. .

Karen, I'm so glad to see your post concerning your daughter. I have been looking for teens who have or want to get banded. I have a daughter who is also 17-1/2 and overweight. She appears to have the same BMI as your daughter, but is 5'10". She has been to weight loss camp for 6 summers which didn't help in the long run (but she had a great time!).

She has her first appt with the local lap band clinic in two weeks and she is quite hopeful that this procedure will finally give her the true help she needs for long term success. She is a beautiful girl with a fabulous smile, but so unhappy over her size and inability to wear cute clothes and swimsuits. She has battled migraines, too, tho the worst of that seems to be past. We also hope that, if successful, she will be healthier all round and able to enjoy sports again.

We would like to keep up with Hanna's recovery, attitude, and pros/cons to the procedure if that is OK. Maybe the girls can exchange email or IM addresses. Good luck to you both.

Hi Sally. From what I know, insurance won't even consider anyone below 18 yrs. old. Also, I trusted Dr. Ortiz the most because I feel he has the most experience with teens. Please let us know how your consult goes. I will e-mail you Hanna's e-mail.

Karen, we are not even going to attempt to have insurance cover this because we are already certain that they won't. We do believe that our daughter is definitely mature enough to undergo this procedure and understands it well. We are hoping that the doctor will accept her for a summer banding as she goes to boarding school in PA and we want to make sure she is doing well with the band before going back to school in Sept. She turns 18 in Oct. Thank you for Hanna's email address! I will pass it along to my daughter.

Hi, my name's Brittany. I noticed that noone's really posted on here lately but I was wondering if I could speak with your daughter. I'm fifteen and I'm considering having the surgery and I would love to talk to a teen about it. If you happen to check this out, please get ahold of me. My email is bnicole08@tusco.net I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks.

Hi everyone,

My daughter, who is 17, has just had the lap band surgery on June 15th. She is doing good and up and around and back hanging out with her friends. I would love her to be able to talk with some other teens that has had the surgery, so if interested email me and I will send her your email address, kim.nelson@apachecorp.com. For those that have had the surgery, how are you doing, and what has been difficult, if anything, for you.

Thanks for the help
