I was a day late and a dollar short earlier. Dang it! But I was wondering doesn't the OCC have Dr. Ortiz's book to purchase their at his surgery center? If not, does anyone have any idea where to purchase his book? Thanks, dianna oh, I found a family picture and tried to update my photo from my little hedgehogs to our little family photo. But I am not sure if I did it right. anyway....thanks!

My primary care doctor knows about me getting a lap band. But I haven't seen him since I set a date (July 2nd). I work in the hospital setting, and a friend of mine is one of our local surgeons and I asked him if he would help me out if I needed anything post. He was very agreeable. It is a good idea to let your primary care doctor know so that he can help network with you if you did need a surgeon locally. My surgeon friend did ask me if my primary care doctor knew what that I was getting the lap band, so they could be on the same page if they needed to communicate with one another. If your band isn't covered by insurance then any post-op complications are likely not going to be either. At least that is what it is in my case. Hope this helps. You can call your insurance company and ask too. Dianna

Julie: I don't have a picture of myself, because I am the one always behind the camera. So I had a cute little picture of new born baby hedgehogs. I wish the picture was bigger. They are so cute! -in the larger picture! Thanks for asking, and thanks for your encouragement!!!!!!!!!!! ~dianna~

So Kirma has helped me figure out how to do all those neat things I like everyone has/does. Like the glitter star etc. Hope this worked. I now down 7 pounds. 5 more to go for Dr. Miranda before July 2nd, my surgery date. I start my pre-op diet on Monday. Which will include: Shake for breakfast, one for lunch, and then for me a South Beach dinner. Lots of water, green salad, cucumbers, sugar free jello, and sugar free Popsicles. I thought all popsicles were nothing but SUGAR, so what kind do I get? Thanks for your technical help Kirma, you are a fun gal!!!!!!!!!!!! ~dianna~

I don't know if this forum is right for me.

I understand that you want those banded & soon to be banded to follow the letter of the law. However, it seems like you are casting stones, and as far as I have ever been told only HE who is without sin may cast the first stone. If you are fat, which I don't know, then you have not followed the letter of the law either and that is considered cutting your nose off despite your face. If you are fat, regardless of being banded or not, you know what it is like to fall off the wagon. I don't condone someone saying its "okay" to down that much food in one sitting, please understand. I think the word "okay" needed to NOT be apart of the support given to who ever it was. But support needed to be given, so that whoever it was that "downed" the soup and ice ream, didn't continue in a downward spiral. Dianna -
Beth, I'm a registered nurse. I have worked in the acute care setting for the last > 6 years and in a surgical setting for the last 4. I have spoken with Dr. Ortiz myself and "drilled" him. He satisfied my every question (from his O.R. surgical practice, his surgical technique, surgical equpiment, post care, etc.). You and I both know that hearing it from the proverbial "horses mouth" --Dr. Ortiz--carries more weight than from others. You won't be disappointed. Talk with the OCC center, get to know them. Investigate the kind of band he uses for yourself. It is an FDA approved band --by the USA--that Dr. Ortiz uses. BTW, a friend of mine who is one of our hospital surgens has asked me about Dr. Ortiz so he could research himself. He has patients in mind that he wants to refer to Dr. Ortiz. ~Dianna~

I love to shop, but honestly I have been so focused on getting my band that it didn't cross my mind about shopping. So please.....do tell.....What is this place I am hearing so much about? Revolution Ave? What do they have there? Any tips on going? I arrive the morning of July 1st, my surgery is July 2nd in the morning and then I stay overnight till the 3rd in their clinic/hospital, and then am discharged to the hotel until the 4th when my plane leaves. So I wonder when I will get some shopping done? I would LOVE to hear from you all about your shopping experiences. ~dianna~

This is how I feel.   I have been strictly on 1200 calories since last Friday. I weighted myself at work: 242 lbs. I weighted myself at home: 241 lbs. Each morning I wake up, go pee (sorry to much information) and then weigh myself. With the littlest weight reduction gives me the feeling that yes I am doing the right thing, the food choices I am making are working, and helps to keep me motived to continue to make good food choices that day. Here is my dilemma. My scale this morning said I weigh 237 lbs., I shower, get ready for work, and when I get to work - I work in scrubs which weigh baring anything - take off my shoes and the scale says I am still 242 lbs. WHAT FREAKIN GIVES?   I have breakfast , mid morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and a snack. 1200 calories worth, drink between 40-80 fluid ounces of water a day. So tonight my friend and I worked out on the elipical for 30 min. and well continue to work out 5 days a weeks, 30 min. sessions. Has this happened to others? I feel so alone, and frustrated. Please, can you write me and let me know what is going on with my stupid weight. :lb12: ~dianna~

I love what Will T said, and may I say that I echo his words too! Welcome, our new friend and comrade! We will beat the food battle together, one day at a time. Just know you are NOT alone in this, even if you feel isolated (living in Alaska). You will find more kindness and encouragement here on the forum than the state of Alaska could hold. Ask away, to any of us. Vent yourself when you need to, and just know you have friends here! ~dianna~

Hey, I'll be arriving July 1st, so maybe I'll get to see you there!! ~dianna~

Have your tried eating three times a day? That might be a real silly question, but if you are not eating in regular intervals (breakfast/lunch/dinner) with a few snacks...if you are not doing this your body may be in starvation mode and holding on. Keep up the great work!!!! I only wish I had that much drive to exercise as much as you. What dedication!!! great job =D> ~dianna~

Remind us again, when were you banded? When was your first fill? Maybe we can put our minds together to help you out. Don't get too discouraged yet. We are all here for you. When one of us is down, we are all down. So hang in there and lets try to put 2 & 2 together. ~dianna~

I am so excited for you!!! Good luck! ~dianna~

As a registered nurse myself let me explain why we tell patients not to eat or drink before surgery---not even water---. Your mouth and stomach are a dumb machine. Meaning, it does not know the difference between chewing gum and chewing a nice thick steak. What then happens is that your stomach starts to produce its gastric acids for preparations to digest the food it thinks it is going to get. This happens even when you drink water, gastric juices are produced in anticipation for digestion. Typically the stomach doesn't empty fully for 4-6 hours. So what happens if you drink water, chew gum, or eat something even something soooo small, gastric acids/juices are made and sit in your stomach. It is important not to have anything in your stomach before surgery because as they induce anesthesia, and before you are intubated -a tube they put in your airway to protect it- what ever is left in your stomach can come up the esophagus and down into your airway. This is called aspiration. It can make you very sick, and typically causes pneumonia. Some patients then have to be put on a ventilator. I am not giving advice...just letting you know the pathophysiology here. It is important to follow your Dr. instructions. If you don't understand why...just ask them to explain. I hope this helps! ~dianna~

Smoking interferes with anesthesia, pain control, and healing. Dr. Ortiz sent me a document that he wrote and said that this --no smoking-- is key. He has also said that he has canceled surgeries for those that are non compliant. In his document he says he has vowed to help better lives, which he takes very seriously...to which he follow up with "so should you!" I am not telling you this to scare you. But to let you know he does take it very seriously. I don't want to sound heavy handed here, I do understand. I have always thought that to stop smoking for any length of time is hard, I liken it to dieting. It is NOT easy, but worth it, yes. You can do it!!!!!!! Get on the forum when you have tough days, we are all here to help every step of the way!!!!!!!!! ~dianna~

How exciting My surgery date is also July 2nd. I'm a little nervous about the whole flying thing though. I do understand about the $$$$ . But I opted to still bring my husband along for support. I know a few friends of mine who have gone to the OCC by themselves and did great. Maybe I'll see you there! ~dianna~

This is my pre-op diet for two weeks before I go on Dr. Miranda's. Do you all find that being inside in the house is that hardest time to be "good?" This A.M., I already feel like a failure :lb12: . I had two cups of cereal with Skim milk (which in my mind I have deviated from my plan of only having a Atkins shake...so I feel weak of mind and that makes me sooooo mad at myself #-o ), but I didn't wait to make the cereal real moist with the milk I just started to eat it mostly dry and then didn't drink the milk afterward. My hardest struggle is control ( . And for me it is a mental thing. Yesterday I was hungry but it didn't hurt. But the mental aspect of my hunger was extremely hard to ignore. What do you all think? I love hearing from you all, it is comforting to know that I am not alone. ~dianna~
