October Surgery Patients
mommyrkr replied to Cheryl Kilcollins's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
Barbara, I think she was probably more impressed with my research than progress, as it has only been 3 1/2 weeks since my surgery. But I am very excited to have a lapband buddy so close to me. I haven't missed food yet. I still eat what I want, if I am craving something, I just don't need the quantity. And I know I need a fill. For example, I know snickers candy bars are so bad for you, but I have craved one during the whole liquid diet. I bought the snack size bars, you know, Halloween candy, adn I had one, and was fine, I was done. That would never happen before, I would eat half the bag before I felt like I had enough. But today, one was fine. It is a miracle, I just don't think about food as much. I feel like I have my life back. Becki -
October Surgery Patients
mommyrkr replied to Cheryl Kilcollins's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
Hey Tuesday, I will be there on the 23rd for my aunts surgery, and my first fill. I am really looking forward to going back. And this time as a support person. Good luck to all who will be there in October. Becki -
Marys, Is the grocery store north or south of the Lucerna. Which way do you turn out of the parking lot? Also, does anyone know what it takes to go to Costco in Mexico? Just a regular Costco card? And does anyone speak English? Becki
-
I plan on bringing my camera. Then you can all see how much fun you would be having if you lived in Washington!! Becki
-
Crystal light is completely fine the whole time. I didn't know they has so many flavors in Mexico. I might have to look when I go for a fill trip. Becki
-
Hey NWMarc. You should come to Bahama Breeze at Southcenter on October 8th at 5pm. A bunch of us are meeting and would love to have everyone who has been banded join us. Becki

I had a poached egg, which was completely fine, and half an english muffin. It was the best food I have ever had. I love solid food!! Dave, I'm jealous of your weight lose. I am still hoovering between 23-33 pounds. But I guess it will come. I am anxious to be on to the next phase of this. I am also anxious to figure out if I will need a fill. It looks like my aunt will be having surgery and I will be going with her the end of October. So I really hope I need a fill, as I will be there anyway. I think I probably will, but who knows. Right now, I still don't eat much, but I'm sure that will change. Becki

Soft Foods - Riddle Me This??
mommyrkr replied to Skylacker's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
That is a great question, and one that I had wondered about. I hope someone has an answer. From what I have read, it sounds like people do oatmeal, cream of wheat and cereal and consider it solid food. I am curious what Dr. Ortiz thinks about this. I would love to eat those things, but thought they would be too soft. Becki -

BBuck and Clynn, Good luck on your surgeries. (and everyone else, actually). Just wanted to let you know to check out the Washington bandsters log. We will be meeting for dinner on October 8th at Bahama Breeze At 5:00 in Southcenter (it is a Sunday) if you might be interested. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you brought some liquids. But it would be great to see more Washingtonians there. I'm from Tacoma, not far. Becki -
Chrissy, That is when I'll be there. And oh, the food sounds soooo good. I can't wait to bring home leftovers. See you all in a few weeks Becki

Arrival Time and Hotel Check in
mommyrkr replied to Lapoli7's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
They do not charge extra for your companion to stay in the hotel the night that you have surgery. They do however, if you don't have a companion, ask you to take your things and check out. No point in paying for a hotel room that no one is using. But if you have someone with you, that is included in the price of the surgery. Just did the whole thing a few weeks ago, and no problems. Becki -
I get to eat solid food tomorrow!!!! YIPPEE!! The last few days have been a little hard, today is a little better, I went grocery shopping....for things I will eat! I am planning an egg with toast for breakfast, a slice of ham and some veggies for lunch, and chicken with more veggies for dinner. I am way to excited about this. Thought maybe I wasn't as obsessed with food as I thought, but the last few days have changed my mind. I am even more obsessed than before, but maybe it is just the timing. Alright, I can't wait. Becki

I will be going for my first fill most likely on Tuesday, October 24th. I will be there with my aunt who is getting banded on the 23rd. So I will be at the Lucerna, but would love to know if someone else might be there getting filled. I am nervous about my fills. Becki

carbonated beverages
mommyrkr replied to chrissysdolphin's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
Lori, How have you done? You post all kinds of great information on here, but never how much you have lost, or how your fill worked for you. Have you only had one fill? How is it going? I talked to you on the phone the first time I called. You were very encouraging. Just wondering how the surgery has worked for you. Becki -
I was a little worried about eggs also, after someone said they didn't sit too well with them. But I am also having a hard time thinking of good breakfast food, with protein, that is not too mushy. I wonder if people are doing cereal or cottage cheese, or oatmeal. That kind of thing. I will be going back for a friends surgery in a month, so I will be asking about those things. Have fun in Hawaii. I am jealous. But I will be able to eat for my anniversary which is very exciting. Becki

My mom is a dental hygienist. She makes me and my kids chew gum with zylitol in it (very very good for teeth) for 5 minutes three times a day. That was one question I was required to have answered before I had her blessing on the surgery. But Dr. Miranda said 5 minutes was fine, just not longer. But apparently 5 minutes is all that is needed to get the zylitol on your teeth. So I got Mom's blessing. Becki

I'm planning an omelet too, or maybe a poached egg and toast. I can't wait either. I really want some chicken for dinner though. I am still trying to decided how to cook it. I can't wait for real food....just a couple more days. Dave, you are doing awesome. I finally started losing again, which is pretty exciting after a week of being stuck. So I am down 24 pounds now. Don't feel guilty. You have done great. What is done is done and you can't undo it. Probably, you will moved on to the next stage tomorrow anyway. Just be sure to follow all the advice as closely as you can. You wouldn't want to cause yourself any problems later. But my advice is just not to worry about it, since you can't undo it anyway. Just start again today, doing everything perfect. Becki

Teeners, If you had surgery on 9/7, you are one week out today aren't you? You should still be on the clear liquids part of the diet then. I know for me, for the first week and a half to two weeks, I had very little, maybe a 1/2 to 3/4 a cup at a time. I am on day 17 today, and I just now can eat a hole cup at a time. You might want to recheck the post diet instructions, just to make sure you are not pushing things to much. Oh, and the first 10 days, at most, I could drink one yogurt smoothie a day. And I usually worked on it 4 times a day. Becki

Karen, how are you doing now. It has been a week since you updated here, and if I counted right, you are on full liquids now. Are you doing better on full liquids? Becki

I am 2 1/2 weeks post op. I get the same pain, especially the first week, but still now, but only when I have had too much to eat or drink too fast. It comes kind of slow, and if I stop I am fine, if I drink more, it hurts worse. Try eating slower and it might help. Becki

This is a great question. I am very unsure of what 1/3 of what I ate before might look like. I was always either completely overdoing it, getting last meals in before a diet, or on a diet. I can't remember a time when I just ate normally, so 1/3 is very vague to me. I also wonder what constitutes solid food. It also seems to be a little unclear. Thanks for the question, I look forward to some ideas. Becki

Good for both of you guys. Weight Watchers works. And it works great as long as you are committed to it and follow the program. My family has lost (and kept off for almost 4 years now), a substanstial amount of weight. My aunt and mom about 80 lbs each!! You can do it! I was banded a little over two weeks ago. But I was back at Weight watchers last Monday. The band is just a tool, like Weight watchers is. And I plan to use them together. Keep us posted on how you are doing. Having good support in Weight Watchers is also a big key, maybe this is not a bad place to find some. Becki

Hey Dave, I feel your pain. I want something with some texture soooooo bad. But I am counting down. I have made it this far doing everthing perfect, so I am not about to waste all my hard work. Yesterday was my daughters fifth birthday. No cake, no dinner, nothing but pea soup. It was hard. Becki

Tons of general questions
mommyrkr replied to raiinstorm's topic in Gastric Band Support & Discussion
Hello Rain, I know that Dr. Ortiz would do your surgery. For me, the surgery was $8500, airfare $230, the cost of several fills, which will bring it up to about $10,000, I am guessing. I also didn't want to have high interest loans. My husband is a teacher, working on his Masters, and I am a stay at home mom, so we got a student loan through Sallie Mae. You might check into student loans to pay for this also, they have better repayment plans for someone in school, like deferments. I am still on the post-op diet after banding a few weeks ago, so I have not had solid foods, but from what I understand, a few fruits and veggies can be difficult, those that are very fibrous, but most are fine. You should be very careful being a vegetarian to get enough protein, as I'm sure you already are. You mentioned in your post something about eating after the bypass. The surgery that most of us here have had, or are having, is not gastric bypass, but lapband surgery. I don't know if that was just a mistake or if you were uncertain. The results long term are similar, but how much you eat, and how fast you lose the weight is different, as are many other things. Becki
