5 weeks post op and I had to have a second surgery because the port had turned to the point where it was impossible to get to to fill. So far I have paid $100 in transportation for 3 trips to the Surgeon, $415 surgeon fees and I finally have my first fill of 1.5 cc. I didnt realize the lapband was going to be so expensive to maintain but thru it all I still feel it is totally worth it!
Since the fill I have had some weird nautious spells. After I drink water, soup or whatever it goes down fine but shortly after i start to feel sickly, lightheaded kind of dissy, and I break out in a sweat! totally wierd kindof like a very carsick feeling. It goes away with some deep breathing and a little bit of time. Has anyone else experienced this? what causes it?
I have lost 16lbs in 5 weeks. Eventhough I have little restriction I am loosing weight because I decided to partake in the 5 day pouch test monday thru friday until I have reached the all elusive "Sweet Spot". I refuse to gain weight thru this "bandster hell" My family is very supportive, my inlaws are not and I WILL NOT allow then to think even for a second that this is again another waist of time and money. I have spent so much thru the years trying to Battle Obesity on my own! With the lapband I will not fail.
MOVING FORWARD! The 5 day PT get a little easier each time. And I really Like fish so this is a great one for me.
Has anyone heard of ISOPURE??? I have heard it is the BEST protien drink with 40 grams of protien 0 carbs in a 20oz bottle.
But it is $3.?? per bottle at the Dr.s Office. Does anyone know of a cheaper place to get ISOPURE??

I have been thinking abou just throwing OUT the Scale! it is like I let it determine if I am happy or not! CRAZY!!!! It is soo important to get a bigger picture than the number on the scale. Inches, Loose clothes, energy, knowing if today thier is no weight loss that is ok! keeping a positive attitude is totally important and we cant let the numbers depress us. I have noticed it is like I am addicted to stepping on the scale... every morning I just cant walk past it...... UGGGGGG
I am totally going to put it somewhere out of mind so I can kick it!
I believe the stage we are in is called "bandster hell". which is the plateau or weight gain after the band surgery before the sweet spot! YUCK! WE WILL make it through it.
    With much prayer..........
Hey I started the 5 day pouch test today. I am trying to beat the head hunger. The carb withdrawals are tough. But the website did say where they get too bad we can eat a fruit to help. So I ate a 1/4 of banana and it helpped. almost half way thru day one. I am just trying mak it one breath at a time.

I found a Surgeon who will Adjust my lapband eventhou my surgery was done in Mexico. I have been wondering about going back to Tj for fills because my Surgeon Dr. Kelly is a wonderful DR. It is just hard to find someone to watch my 3 kids to go. And the person I found is only 1.5 hours away and I can take them with me. (I will just make a field trip out of the day) THe fill dr here charges 150 for the fill and 350 if he needs to use the flouro. $500 ouch! But what are my options?! I hope he wont have to use fluro or I am out of luck and out of money! Fill centers USA is good but they are 200 miles away! It is 350 for the first round with fill centers, I believe it includes fluro????? I dont know.... I just wish I could go to my surgeon which I cant do with 3 kids!
Should I keep my appt on the 8th? I have the 150 but not the 350 more if fluro is needed. I am just hoping it wont be needed!
    or
cancel the appt on the 8th and find a bb sitter who will watch my kids for days so I can go back to TJ. My surgeon only charges $200 and he ALWAYS does fluro. I need to see how much the ticket would be.........
    or
cancel the 8th and go to Fill centers USA drive 200 miles one way with kids pay 350 and hope it covers the fluro and fill.
Options options.... For all of the MOMS out there.... What would you do?

I went in on the 8th to get a fill and they COULDNT get it.
After a X-ray I can see that instead of the port face pointing away from my spine it is pointing slightly towards my left shoulder. It is like it is sitting on my bellf "Shelf". but you know it makes since because since the port it stitched onto my muscle and my belly i pointed that way the port is that way too. I am just hoping it can still be filled and with the exrays we now can see how it sits and SHOULD be able to get it done. If not then I guess I should be getting a passport.
I will have to get a passport and go to TJ. I can fly into Tj for 1000, or to SanDiego for $380.
I will have to go to the local Post office to get my passport card. here is a break down of the costs- state-$20, post office- $25. I will need my birth cert., drivers Lic. , 2 photos (white bkrd), they may take it there.
I called 1877-487-2778 to get this information.
I hope this helps anyone else who may be going to MX.

After my one week report my insision's scab rubbed off in the shower and the bump came streaming out! YUCK, BUT the skin on all but one insision has completly healed over and the only bump it the line of scar tissue under each line. and of course I can feel the port under the one.
My week 2 isnt quite here yet that is tuesday so I dont know how much i will have lost by then.
I did get a sneak peek and so far I have lost 4lbs this week which is a total of 12 lbs since my lapband's b-day. I think the key to not getting discouraged is weighting in weekly not daily. (That is the hard part)
I will check in again after the 2 week mark. I am also keeping a video log on you tube and myspace.
FYI - (yes, I am showing the healing of the insisions) LOL

Checking in for my week one post op and I have to say I feel AWESOME..
My energy is BACK. No Pain, Lost 8 pounds.
I just couldnt do the liquids any more so I have been eating mushies and fruits, CHEW CHEW CHEW.
The wounds are healing very well, I do have a bit of a bump where the port incision is. So I am wondering what you all have experienced when it comes to swelling and how long it takes to be not noticable.
let me know, Thank you, Leah

Surprize. My family decided (Lets GO Camping!) So I did not get down to the 235 I had hoped for but I did maintain 240 lbs so that is ok.
I am back from Mexico now. My band was place 4-5 pm on the 19th. this puts me just about 4 days post op. I do know when I was in the hospital the night of the 19th and day of the 20th the pain was more of what I expected. I felt pretty good. Mostly like I had done 100 sit-ups there for my abdomen was totally sore. but it was bearable. I thought my left shoulder was hurting from the airport, luggage, and travels home on the 20th. By the time I got home to Oregon on the night of the 20th I was wiped out. The hospital meds had worn off in transit and by the time I was home I hurt every where. With my mom at my house taking care of my family and I, I was able to sleep most of my 2nd day post op. Drinking limited liquid, meds, and sleeping was all I did. I had to remind myself I had a surgery it is OK to need time. The 22nd ( 3rd day post op) I felt 10 times better. but my stamina was still easily drained. After being up for about 15 minutes, I needed to rest. The pain was manageable, I was starting to walk upright ( my 100 sit-ups starting to wear off), the left shoulder pain was still there every once in a while but minimal. Now it is the 23rd and I have been up all day. I am not allowed to do an lifting, which my 17 month old little guy doesn’t like in the slightest. And I sit and take a break when I am feeling tired. My twins are 9 years old and have really stepped up with the chores and my husband is doing the rest. For the most part I am feeling pretty good. The Doctor has me taking pain and antibiotics so I am sure they are a part of things going so well.
    Ok the stats....
I left for Mexico ( which was a great surprise.. I will upload the pictures)- 240lbs
this morning- 234 lbs starting Tuesday 5/26/09 I will be weighing weekly to keep the changes a surprises.
I know when I refer the this 6 lbs and lost forever I can say that not just because of the Lapband but because of the lifestyle change I am choosing with the AID of the Lapband. I do realize the Lapband is a tool not a miracle worker. It will take personal determination to NOT retrain my NEW BABY STOMACH to except unhealthy foods. I hope in the last 29 years I have learned enough lessons the hard way to do what I know it right to produce a healthy life style for my family and I. The Lapband offers me a physical redo. Now the work is up to me.
I thank God for knowledge and wisdom given to my Surgeon Dr. Kelly. With this tool I have chosen to overcome the spirit of gluttony.
Rejoicing as I step forward, I can fulfill Ephesians 5: 1
Follow God’s example in everything you do, because you are his dear children.

Well this is 3rd day preop and I havent stuck to it at all.
Today has been an emotional roller coaster. My inlaws are not going to support me in getting the lap band. They feel it is dangerous and expensive, and an excuse for not having the self disipline to follow thru with a Biblical way of eating. I know I have these issues that is why I need the lap band. To put me back in control of this mess! My mom is willint to fly to Oregon from NewYork to watch the kids. She has seen my battle with obesity and knows I have done everything in my will power to kick this gluttony.
I know God can do all things, he can even make this body healthy, but it is I who continues to fail. I am sick of the constant battle for years and years. this decision was not made lightly or without a cost. The details are extensive and unneeded.
Are there any christian lapbanders out there?!?!?
Is the lapband an excape for those who lack in faith?
How much can a person endure?

Day one went great. Day two we went to town. I was good all morning. Soy milk carrot juice and isopure. MMMMM until I ran out!!!
by 3 I was starving. so I took my kids out to Mongolian BBQ which is one of those places where we can load up a bowl with meat veggies noodles and sauces and they cook it on a round grill right in front of us. So I figured if I was going to break the PT I was going to do it with just meat and veggies (no noodles) which really are my favorite. So I ate lapband style. But real food. And we had leftovers of the same for dinner. Man I woke up HUNGERY this morning day 3!!!!!!!!! YUCK!! I am just going to call it quits for this week because I know the weekends are impossible.
BUT NOT GIVING UP! MONDAY I WILL GET A FRESH START AND I WILL SUCCEED IN THE 5 DAY PT.
  12. leahwebster
I already can feel the difference after the PT has started. This morning I drank 16 oz right down before feeling full. by 3pm this afternoon I had the same satisfied feeling after an 8oz cup. So I know I had stretched it out grazing all weekend. I am glad I am doing the 5 day pt to get back on the ball.
here is the total nutrition facts at the end of today. I drank ALOT of soymilk (yes with a little creamer) Isopure, and a small dinner splurge(3 bites of tune Noodle cassaroll) that really threw of my carb count!

UGGHHH! I feel so sluggish. We went to a family BBQ with some friends of ours stayed up late, watched fireworks and ATE ATE ATE! I feel So tired, sluggesh, just plum bushed!
My husband made me promise no counting or measuring, just have fun! OK, I am relying on my lapband now!
yuck, I slimed for the first time in weeks if not longer. I only have 1.5 cc fill and next to no restriction. I ate more than I thought I was capable of! Just thru the day of visiting and snacking when dinner came everyone dished up for dinner and I was not hungery but because every one else was having dinner they were like arent you going to have dinner!
I was like uhhhh, yea. SHOULDNT HAVE DONE IT! I tried to just sit and let the one corn shelled pork taco settle and it didnt work. SLIM! atleast I was able to make it to the bathroom without drawing attention to myself! Ok so we all mess up.
This morning I woke up HUNGERY, I hope I didnt slip the band or something. I have been eating by measure and stopping when I was satisfied this week and it has been working! I weighed in before we left and it said 221!!! yea!!! Broke the plateau. Lost 19 lbs since surgery.
I guess the band is teaching me a lesson in what not to do! So I want to se what I have to do to repair the damage......
5 day pouch test here I come! But I need to tweek it to be.....
HIGH protein (40%of calorie intake minimum)
LOW Carb. (30% of calorie intake Max.)
and DRINK DRINK DRINK- 1000 calories and 64 oz of water.
This is what the nutritionist at my surgeons office recemends
The nurse at my fill dr.s office is very blunt I love it! I told her I had restricted my calories thru willpower to keep loosing weight with no fill and she plainly said, " that was stupid!" and we started talking about metabolism and protien.
so I have a challenge set in front of me. But the liquid diet will flush my system and condition my pouch to function properly. And get me off of grazing! If the pouch capacity hasnt reduced by the time the 5 day PT is done I will get a fill appt scheduled. But I hesitate getting a fill too soon because I HAVE to eat about 1000 calories or so to keep my metabolism going or it tanks and I cant loose weight!
4th of July Holiday Recovery- Starting monday- 5 day PT round #3!!!!! Anyone want to join me?
  14. leahwebster
My 2 cents is in blue so no one get confused.
So why do we hit those nasty plateau's???
That's one reason it's almost always easiest to lose weight at the start of a diet, and harder later on, Kimball says: "When you are very overweight your metabolism is already running so high that any small cut in calories will result in an immediate loss."
Then, when you lose significant amounts of body fat and muscle, your body needs fewer calories to sustain itself, she says. That helps explain why it's so easy to regain weight after you've worked to lose it.
"If two people both weigh 250 pounds, and one got there by dieting down from 350 and the other one was always at 250, the one who got there by cutting calories is going to have a slower metabolism," says Yanagisawa. "That means they will require fewer calories to maintain their weight than the person who never went beyond 250 pounds."
    WHAT TO DO...
    Eat More, Burn Better
Of course, the diet advice we'd all love to hear is "Eat more and lose more weight!" But what really works is "Eat more often, and you'll lose more weight." Small, but frequent, meals help keep your metabolism in high gear, and that means you'll burn more calories overall.
YEA! this is what we have all wanted to hear! here is a great link on revving up the metabolism...
    http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/guid...tabolism?page=2
and here is some info I have gleaned from it.
""When you put too many hours between meals, your metabolism actually slows down to compensate," says Kimball.
If you then eat a huge meal -- at the same time your metabolism is functioning as if you're starving -- your body wants to hold on to every calorie.
While this won't make much difference on an occasional basis, Kimball says, make it a way of life and it can get harder to lose or maintain weight.
Kimball's advice is borne out by the findings of a study that was presented at the 2005 annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine. Researchers from Georgia State University reported that when athletes ate snacks totaling about 250 calories each, three times a day, they had greater energy output then when they didn't snack.
The study also found that snacking helped the athletes eat less at each of their three regular meals. The final result was a higher metabolic rate, a lower caloric intake, and reduction in body fat.""
What GREAT news this is for US bandsters! I was taking things all wrong. I was practicing "self control" all day long only eating when my belly button was eating my back bone! GROWLING "Hungery, FEED ME" So to me lesson one is eat every 2-4 hours when I am feeling hungery It is ok. NO MORE GUILT FOR SNACKING! this was verified also on 2 other sites listed below...
    http://health.msn.com/fitness/articlepage....entid=100096731 they said....
" 3. Eat. It may sound crazy to those trying to lose weight by severely restricting their daily caloric intake, but the problem with this old school of thought, explains Michigan dietician Julie Beyer, is that it actually slows metabolism. “Every cell of the body is like a flashlight bulb,” she explains. “When our bodies don’t get enough food, or fuel, every cell burns less brightly.” Recent studies show that eating smaller meals every three to four hours aids metabolism and weight loss.
    4. Ditch the sugar. Of course, you still have to make good choices about what you eat. “When you eat sugar you throw your metabolic switch into fat storage mode,” says Lieberman, who suggests a predominately low glycemic index diet, meaning foods that, unlike sugars, are broken down gradually to help maintain an even blood-sugar level.
    5. Don’t skip breakfast. It’s a fact that people who eat a healthy breakfast are skinnier than people who don’t. And try to think outside the box. A breakfast bowl of vegetables and brown rice is a great way to kick-start your metabolism for the day.
    6. Include hot foods. If Mexican and Thai are favorites, you’re in luck. “Spicy food that has hot peppers in it appears to boost metabolism,” Lieberman says.
    7. Drink green tea. “There are unhealthy things that can boost your metabolism, like a really strong cup of coffee, or nicotine, but I would never say go have a cigarette!” says Michelle Streif, a personal trainer in Nebraska. Nor overdo it on caffeine, which also has undesirable side effects. Instead, go for green tea, says Lieberman, which is known to stimulate metabolism longer and more effectively than coffee.
    8. Don’t forget H2O. Staying well hydrated is essential to flushing the body of toxic byproducts that are released when fat is burned. Cold water may also give your metabolism at least a small boost because energy is required to heat the body."
    So what do we eat??
    check this site out... http://www.ecosalon.com/boost-metabolism/
THis is a great site giving us the facts about PROTEIN!
    http://www.wellnessresources.com/tips/arti...ps_weight_loss/
A little bit from it. I am glAD i LOVE EGGS! " Eating two eggs for breakfast has been shown to boost weight loss by 65%, compared to the same amount of calories from carbohydrates – like a bagel." "The amount of quality protein in your diet is the single most important calorie that influences your metabolic rate, favorably influencing weight loss. Quality protein also helps you sustain muscle during weight loss, improve muscle fitness, improve immunity, improve antioxidant function, build HDL cholesterol, and enhance insulin and leptin function – all of which contribute toward optimal weight management efforts over time."
These are some great facts! I hope this helps others on thier Lapband journey as it has me. Good Night.

today I am going to take Step one in boosting my metabolism. INCREASE my calories!
Yep I said it INCREASE! My personal goal is to EAT 1000 calories a day. YEA now the types of calories...
protien as much as possible. I have been keeping track of my intake and out go on Livestron and I really like it. here is the link.
    http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate/us...when=2009-06-30
I am a visual person and I really like the chart on the right hand side telling me how the calories break down. This is my goal today.
  16. leahwebster
Ok everyone, Lapband takes care of the intake of calories just why does our bodies greedily hold on to every calorie that enters our mouths???? METABOLISM!!!!!! I am on a bit of a rant here but I for one am sick of this sluggish metabolism that is insistant to "Survive" thru this "STARVATION period" it seems to think it is in. I am going to make it my personal goal to find a way to get in enought of the right kind of calories and the right activities to beat this Ol' body at its own game!
First I will learn what the metabolis is, how it works, and how to get it to BURN BURN BURN UP THIS FAT I have successfully stored away in my time of plenty. I also need to learn how does the lapband effect the metabolism. With this knowledge I will see success. You wil too!!!!!!
Also, my husband is home until after the 4th of July which means it will be inpossible to stick to liquids all day until my protien dinner. I will do the best I can to eat healthfully and I will LISTEN to the band when It says WHOA no more food. But NO 5 day pouch test this week. This will be a great chance the stretch my metabolism, focus on protien, and see what "normal lapband living" is like. I know it is not being on a liquid diet 5/7 all year.
I will report back with my findings.

  17. leahwebster
First fill was again a bust!!!!!
port is turned pointing to my left shoulder. I had hoped he could hit the spot but it just wasnt working.
SO I HAVE TO HAVE THE PORT RE POSITIONED!!! UGGGG
So now I dont know which way to go. My options are to do it here in the states, I have no Idea how much that will cost....
Or back to my surgeon. He said he will fix it and fill it for free I just have to get there. So I am looking at getting the passport- $45, Plane ticket thru Orbitz.com- $355 , and I am checking out one nights stay in a hotel while In TJ. So far it is a $400 bill but that really sound fare to me because if I were to get a fill here in the states or $150 plus the $450 for the flouro (this was just raised) then I would be totalling $600 so financially Mexico still makes sence. My issue is the kids!!!! I have 3 and the youngest is 18 months. Last time I left he developed and really bad fit throwing habit and we have been working thru it. FOr the most part it is fine (but he has is moments) maybe I can get him a passport and take him with, but when I am in the surgery who would care for him, Everone would be a stranger! I think if I can get grandma to watch him and My girls who are 9 years old that would be easiest. But my mom lives in New york and My mother in law doesnt want to be involved with my lapband. She doesnt believe in it. So I havent asked my husband is home on the weekend.. I will have to ask my Dr. if he is willing to work on the weekend. So I guess I have more questions than answers...
  18. leahwebster
OK, I have been sooo hungery, like an constant munchies. When I eat it loast for such a short amount of time , VERY frusterating! I can wait for my first fill. I will be going to RIchland Wa to see Dr. Adrian Heap to get a fill on the 18th. I know it will take time to hit the "SWEET SPOT" but I really lookforward to it! My hope it to eat every 4 hour like a normal person. Just lapband type/size meals! Tuesday is my 4th week the dreaded 1 month bandaversery and I was soooo hoping to have lost 30 pounds, now I see that expectation is not realistic. I just hope I havent gained from my 14 pounds lost so far. So, starting monday I am going to start the 5 Day Pouch Test.
Basically, 2 day liquids, 1 day soft meats, firm, then solid meats
    http://www.5daypouchtest.com/
this link talks all about it. It is great to be able to learn from our bodies and our bands.
This site talks about slider foods, protien, water, gives great reciepts ect. It will be great to see all of the different types of experiences and results we have from this pouch test!

ok I seem to be counting down!!!
    week 1 8#s
    week 2 4#'s
    week 3 2 #'s
yes this totals 14 pounds but I dont like the way this is heading!
I went to get a fill yesterday and even though finding the port was no problem he couldnt seem to get any fill IN. so he is wondering if it is on its side or flipped or what. So now I have to go get an exray to find out if it is tilted or what! so I can get filled.
I can tell I have been eating more (an slice of pizza instead of a 1/2 like I was) and I am hungery every 2 hours or so. I am looking at having to get a pasport and going back to my surgeon in TJ.
I dont know how I could have messed it up??????
Is there some kind of indicator that the port flipped? I though it was sown into place.
hmmmmmm, so I need to try harder and make better food choices. I garden and am outside ALOT with the kids unless it is raining. I cant stand the EXCERXIZE ROUTINE thing! I wouldnt have got the lapband if I didnt ned the help.
but maybe 14lbs inst tooo bad, it has only been 3 weeks. I was just hoping for 5lbs a week for atleast the first month or so....
    well , here we go!
  21. leahwebster
    Day 2 of Pre- OP
I weighed in this morning @ 243 lbs which is 2 lbs lost forever.
It is so nice to know with all of my heart that this is the last time I will have to loose these pounds. I have spent all of my adult life gaining and loosing weight it is a relief to think this battle is won now all I have to do is give it time to catch up with the health that is to become.
    Verse of the day-
Think of ways to encourage one another to outbursts of love and good deeds. HEBREWS 10:24
    Breakfast- Veggie soup broth
    Snack- Peach and Blackberry smoothy
I will come back to post tonight after the food is eaten.

Well, I am just over a week off from flying to San Diego. This whole trip to Mexico will be an brand new adventure! I am SOOOOO excited!
I was going to take the trip with my mom to get my Lapband from Dr. Kelly. She offered to come with me not to get her own lapband but as moral support. Well, as money seems to flow( or not flow) I just cant afford the extra ticket.
Is there anyone out there woh happens to be going at the same time?
I am not to worried, I know God has a plan. Maybe I will meet someone on the way that happens to be in the same boat.....
Soooo, I am just about ready to start my pre-op liver shrinking diet. Dr. Kelly said I only need to be on liquids for the last 3 days before the surgery which would be the 16th to the 18th. But I REALLY want to make the most of my results so I am thinking of getting started on monday instead so I will have been on liquids for one week. But I dont want to prematurly lower my matabilism.
I am hoping I will be able to stick to a liquid diet. I know the reason I am fat is because I have an addiction to carbs ( LOVE breads and Pastas) But this is how I ended up in this situation. I am ready for a change and I hope the lapband will give me the physical "Check System" to not eat as much and all those carbs!
SO here we go...... At the brink of when Dreaming and Doing meet. Stepping out in courage...... And faith, Knowing this body is to be a Temple of The Holy Spirit. I long to be a vessle of Glory not shame. His child created in the Image of God.

    Philippians 4:12-13 (King James Version)
12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
    Praise God!
